Abstract

This thesis was born with the intention of exploring and valuing other ways of producing audiovisual content. This interest is based on the concern for the increasing commercialization of communication and culture as a consequence of the dynamics of the neoliberal economic model and cognitive capitalism. Faced with this mercantile tendency, the social mobilizations that claim the commons have gained strength through concrete practices that generate and defend the commons. These practices contribute to the development of a third model of social management and regulation that addresses the dominant institutions: markets and the creative industries.

The choice of focusing the object of study on the production of documentaries is justified because it is a genre that maintains certain parallels with the commons. This way, the possibility of understanding the documentary as a common, inasmuch as it is a cultural content that tends to become a public good and at the same time it is a practice in which the producers are interrelated, with the represented realities and their audiences.

The relevance of this object of study is justified by the increased use of free licenses on audiovisual content. This fact serves as a starting point to relate it to another variable with which it maintains a certain affinity: the production model. On the other hand, there has also been a boom in forms of collaborative production and collective financing of audiovisual projects, which in turn are related to the increase of content and which present a new form of relationship between producers and their audiences. Due to the lack of specific previous studies and because of the complexity of this field of analysis, the methodological approach to carry out the research begins with an exhaustive bibliographical revision to compose a theoretical framework to establish the fundamentals of the three main concepts for this thesis: production, documentary and commons.

The common’s aproach proposed starts from the critical economy of culture and communication, the new media and digital culture studies, but from a perspective also critical supported in the technopolitics. At this point, the production of documentaries is analyzed, placing it within the framework of cultural industries and digital culture. Next, the theory of the commons offers an overview of the different approaches and their main elements in the audiovisual field. From these, a definition of commons oriented production is presented and an approximation to the way in which it is carried out in the studied field. In sum, the theoretical framework aims to make the audiovisual production more complex, taking into account the contributions of each of the theoretical currents exposed, in order to establish a solid and diverse basis from which to interpret the model of audiovisual production oriented to the common.

From this, a quantitative and qualitative research is proposed. For the first, an online questionnaire is used for documentary producers who publish their works using free licenses and in the second case, in depth interviews are conducted. The intention of this approach is to integrate both methodologies to seek the complementarity of the results. In this way, we aim to reach out to describe the object, as well as being able to offer an analytical explanation of its importance.
