Tula era el nombre familiar de Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, por ello representa en primer lugar, el estado primigenio de la escritura de mujeres latinoamericanas, la Avellaneda profunda sobre la que se sustenta el mito y un lugar de excepción en un canon literario tradicionalmente masculinista. Esta es la primera razón por la que Tula da título a esta tesis, porque esta cubana universal representa el exilio forzado que han sido las escritoras en la historia de la literatura latinoamericana. El punto de partida es entonces un análisis del protagonismo definitivo que adquieren las narradoras cubanas durante la década de los noventa, precisamente cuando la isla atravesaba una de sus peores crisis económicas. El cuarto de Tula es, en este mismo sentido, una invitación a la conquista de nuevos espacios para las narradoras cubanas. Por supuesto, es un guiño al clásico de Virginia Wolf, una habitación propia que las cubanas han reformulado desde diferentes propuestas estéticas. De las Novísimas a las (Post)novísimas, la propuesta implícita en el título es asomarnos a la rehabilitación del espacio reivindicado por Woolf, ahora en un cuarto destartalado de la Habana Vieja, en pleno Periodo Especial. Por otro lado, el título hace referencia también al tema clásico popularizado por Buena Vista Social Club. Desde esta perspectiva adquiere el sema de un espacio fundado para la demanda del placer de Ellas. Así pues, en una segunda parte de la tesis se analiza un corpus de textos atendiendo a las distintas representaciones del erotismo y la sexualidad. Cada capítulo va hilvanando una trayectoria de estrategias que muestran los modos en que estas narradoras han ido conquistando la cama haciéndola suya a base de secretas perversiones y también desastres íntimos. El cuerpo se convierte en la narrativa de mujeres cubanas en una cartografía para la experimentación literaria y erótica. Pero antes de atender al tema del erotismo en la última producción de mujeres cubanas devenía fundamental contextualizar el corpus en la red de intercambios estéticos, aparejados a las más recientes transformaciones de la sociedad cubana y del imaginario simbólico de la Revolución. Un proceso de profunda renovación de la cuentística nacional que, en el nivel discursivo de la postmodernidad, se traduce en un intenso proceso de experimentación formal y de asunción creativa de diversas corrientes del pensamiento y el arte contemporáneo. Entre las autoras destacadas en el corpus adquieren especial relevancia Anna Lidia Vega Serova y Ena Lucía Portela. En primer lugar, la narrativa de Anna Lidia Vega Serova se vislumbra como una radicalización de la propuesta discursiva noventina. A ella se dedica el capítulo 4 –El Erotismo Sucio de Anna Lidia Vega Serova–, en relación al discurso narrativo sobre la marginalidad cubana, que la crítica situación del Periodo Especial parece favorecer. Narraciones en tono realista, pero de un Realismo Sucio –líquido, postmoderno–, en las que el erotismo se perfila en una sucesión de escenas de sexo explícito que, no obstante, se desdibujan bajo el conflicto psicológico de los personajes. Se trata de un fenómeno literario netamente influenciado por la estética norteamericana del Dirty Realism. Por su parte, la narrativa de Ena Lucía Portela cobra protagonismo en los capítulos 6 y 7, a partir de una selección de sus cuentos, sin por ello desatender la referencia a sus novelas. El análisis está organizado en dos grandes vertientes temáticas. Por un lado, el título del capítulo 6 –“Ena Lucía Portela para una poética del erotismo. Las miradas del placer”–, hace alusión al juego de miradas que despliega la narrativa porteliana. La mirada falocéntrica en “Desnuda bajo la lluvia” (1999), y el voyaurismo femenino en “Un loco dentro del baño” (1999). Textos que convergen en un despliegue estratégico de miradas, a partir del cual, el acto de mirar y ser mirado se convierte en una clave temática que otorga poder erótico a la mirada de la mujer. Finalmente, esta tesis no podía llegar a su fin, sin un capítulo específico dedicado al homoerotismo femenino, sin perder de vista las esenciales aportaciones de los escritores varones al homosexualismo literario. Desde Virgilio Piñera –de un modo u otro presente en todo el trabajo– y Lezama Lima, hasta el corte cronológico que representan Roberto Urías y Senel Paz en los noventa.

Tula was the family name of Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, This is the primary reason why Tula is the namesake of this thesis, because this universal Cuban figure represents the forced exile of female writers in the history of Latin American literature. The starting point, then, is an analysis of the definitive roles as protagonists that female Cuban narrators received in the 1990s, precisely when the island was experiencing one of its worst economic crises. In the same sense, Tula’s Bedroom is an invitation for female Cuban narrators to conquer new spaces. It does, of course, pay homage to the classic character Virginia Woolf, a room in which Cuban women have reformulated from different aesthetic offerings. The implicit suggestion of the title is to break free from the rehabilitation of the space reclaimed by Woolf that occurred throughout the nineties and the years that followed, a space which had by that time become a shabby room in Old Havana at the height of the Período Especial. On the other hand, the title also references the popular song by Buena Vista Social Club. From this perspective one recognizes maining of a space created to satisfy women. Therefore, the second part of the thesis analyzes a body of work that deals with the distinct representations of eroticism and sexuality. Each chapter links back to a path of strategies that shows the ways in which these female narrators have conquered the beds of many men, possessing them with the help of secret perversions and intimate disasters. The body then converts the voice of Cuban women into a map of lyric and erotic experimentation. However, before discussing the theme of eroticism in the most recent work by these women, it is fundamental to contextualize this body of work [corpus] in the network of aesthetic exchanges that came about in the most recent transformations in Cuban society and in the symbolic imagination of the Revolution. A thorough renewal of the national storytelling (on the discursive level of Postmodernism), is translated into an intense formal experimentation and into a creative acceptance of diverse currents of thought and contemporary art. Among the outstanding authors of these works, Anna Lidia Vega Serova and Ena Lucía Portela are two of special relevance. Firstly, Anna Lidia Vega Serova’s narrative offers us a glimpse of the radicalism of the nineties discursive offerings. Chapter four – The Dirty Eroticism of Anna Lidia Vega Serova— is dedicated to her, in relation to the narrative about marginalization of Cuba, which the critical situation of the Special Period seems to favor. Narration with realistic tone (but of a dirty, liquid, postmodern realism), in which eroticism takes shape in a succession of explicit sex scenes, are blurred by the psychological conflicts of the characters. The chapter discusses this literary phenomenon, obviously influenced by the North American aesthetic of Dirty Realism. As for Ena Lucía Portela, her narrative becomes the subject of chapters six and seven, starting with a selection of her short stories, while not neglecting her novels. The analysis of her work is organized in two thematic slopes. On the one hand, the title of chapter six—“Ena Lucía Portela for a poetry of eroticism. The look of pleasure,”—alludes to the game of looks or glances that is deployed by Portela’s narrative, such as the phallic “glance” taken in “Naked Under the Rain” (1999) and the female voyeuristic “glance” made in “A Madman in the Bathtub” (1999). These texts converge in a display of fleeting looks or glances, from which, the act of watching and being watched becomes a thematic key that grants an erotic power to the woman’s sense of sight. Finally, this thesis would not be complete without a specific chapter dedicated to feminist homoeroticism, without losing sight of the essential contributions of male writers to literary homosexuality. These male literary counterparts include authors ranging from Virgilio Piñera (present throughout the entire work in one way or another) and Lezama Lima, to the chronological cut that Roberto Urías and Senel Paz represent in the nineties.
