Abstract

This doctoral thesis deals with the drive and control of the positioning of agricultural implements that form functional aspects of machines such as front-end loaders, sugar cane machines harvesters (gatherers and combined), etc. The main aim is to develop a system that drives and controls two or more hydraulic actuators in a simultaneous, coordinated and synchronised way that improves the elevation functionality of double pendulum type mechanisms.
The study of the consulted bibliography allows us to make a detailed analysis of the most important works of the elevation, inclination and turn around mechanical systems of such machines, as well as, the different synchronization alternatives.
In agreement with the above, the basic objectives of this thesis have been centered on: the study of the behavior of a hydraulic synchronization block consisting of two variable partition flow divider units with load compensation as well as two externally piloted pressure regulation units (restrained and limitation of pressure); the simulation of their interaction with the elevating mechanism characteristics using the bond graph method, and finally, the validation and optimization the design and the methodology used through experimental tests. The election of the bond graph as a simulation method obeys the two basic objectives: evaluation of the kinematic and dynamic behavior of the mechanism, as well as its interaction with the model of the hydraulic synchronization block. That is to say, to have a physical model in a multidominion system. The systematic operation of this experimental theoretical methodology has lead to the following conclusions:
From the mechanical / hydraulic point of view, although the kinematic-dynamic behavior of the system during the cycles of ascent and descent is different, it is possible to use flow divider units of identical inherent characteristics (the flow partition curve as a function of the position of the needle). The values obtained in the laboratory and these obtained by means of the numerical simulation differ in the worst case by a value smaller than 10 % (case of descent).
It has been stated that all geometric configurations of the double pendulum mechanisms including actuators (with the exception of a homothetic type) present a nonlinear relationship between the quotients of speeds of the actuators based on the elevation angle. A relationship that limits the synchronization drastically. The nonhomothetics configurations are constant in agricultural drive implements and are imposed, most of the time, by strategic advantages, such as: mechanical advantages, visibility of the worker, space of work, stability, transportability, etc.
For the manufactured and tested prototype, the optimal partition of flow values correspond to a position of the needle of 1.2-1.6, for the cycle of descent and 7-7.1, for the cycle of ascent. Nevertheless, it is not possible to manually compensate the nonlinearity with needle valves.
It has also been stated, experimentally and numerically, that the synchronous is very sensitive to the position of the needle that defines the flow partition.
In general, it is possible to consider that the hydraulic solution offers good performance characteristics although they are penalized as the synchronised hydraulic unit causes an excessive loss of pressure.
Taking into account the great sensitivity of the position of the needle as opposed to the flow division previously mentioned, it has been stated experimentally that there is a significant behavior difference between the cycles of ascent and descent. In some cases, these differences have been cumulative and consequently, after a high number of cycles, the synchronization capacity is lost.
