Geografia imaginària: identitat i literatura a Centreeuropa

Abstract

La investigació ofereix en primer lloc l'anàlisi dels diferents significats que ha adquirit el terme Centreeuropa al llarg del segle XX, des de la consigna alemanya per la conquesta de les regions a l'est del seu territori (Drang nach Osten) fins a una visió nostàlgica de la Monarquia Austrohongaresa. Els anys vuitanta, el terme va adquirir un altre significat i va donar origen a un nombre considerable d'escrits que des de les posicions centreeuropees intentaven repensar la bipartició d'Europa. L'anàlisi comprèn també l'estat de la qüestió després dels grans canvis produïts en aquesta regió entre 1989 i 1991. Un cop definida la necessitat d'evitar el concepte ahistòric de Centreeuropa, la investigació aborda les diferents teories de la nació que han tingut en compte aquesta regió i intenta aclarir a partir d'exemples concrets quin és el rol de la literatura i dels poetes en l'acte de pensar una nació, alhora que vol descriure la relació entre l'art i la societat d'una manera teòrica. Al final es fan paleses les tensions d'un context intercultural des del camp estricte de la història de la literatura i es defensa que no només en el cas de Centreeuropa, sinó també en molts altres casos, l'estudi de la literatura no es pot basar només en les literatures nacionals o bé només en una genèrica literatura mundial, sinó que el context intermedi de les regions literàries és necessari i resulta molt aclaridor.

The thesis provides firstly an analysis of the different meanings that the term "Central Europe" has acquired in the course of the twentieth century, from the German expression for the conquest of its eastern regions (Drang nach Osten) to a nostalgic vision of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. In the eighties, the term acquired a further meaning and gave rise to a considerable number of writings that tried, from Central European positions, to re-think the partition of Europe. This analysis also includes the state of the issue following the huge changes that occurred in the region between 1989 and 1991. After explaining the need to avoid the ahistorical concept of Central Europe, the thesis looks at the different theories of nationhood that have referred to this region and attempts to clarify, on the basis of specific examples, the role played by literature and poetry in the act of thinking a nation, while at the same time it describes in theory the relationship between art and society. The conclusion shows these tensions strictly from the viewpoint of the history of literature, and argues that not only in the case of Central Europe but in many other cases too the study of literature cannot only be based on national literatures, or only on a generic world literature, but that the intermediate context of the literary regions is both necessary and highly revealing.
