Abstract

The aim of this PhD thesis is to carry out a hermeneutical approach to The Story of Esther, by Salvador Espriu, by examining the grotesque in the work. First, the study outlines the state of the question on different theories of the grotesque and from that perspective proposes a definition of the terms which will be used when carrying out the critical study of the work. Second, the nature of Espriu’s re-creation of the Book of Esther is addressed, and in particular the dialogue that he establishes with the prophetic and sapiential literature of the Bible. Third, certain specific aspects of the literary treatment of lexical items as a basis for the sign of the grotesque and its influence on the grotesque characterisation of the dramatis personae are studied. The fourth part analyses the parodic mechanisms in the work and highlights the elements of popular theatre introduced in a play so profoundly hermetic as The Story of Esther. So, from the comparison of the work by Espriu with the 1927 music magazine, La corte del rey Assuero (“King Assuerus’ Court”), it is shown how this genre has a considerable influence over the composition of some of the parodic scenes. Overall, the thesis illustrates how Espriu’s syncretism turns the biblical book into a fable which examines the original story of Esther from on high. In order to do so he inserts fragments of the great literature of the Old Testament into the work to make the puppet show farce the starting point for serious reflection. This Espriuan syncretism also drifts towards a certain generic hybridism which means that some of the fragments that are closest to lyricism or essay forms are caught in the theatrical mesh. In short, this thesis determines how, from a self-conscious mimetic conception that interprets the metafiction from a grotesque grimace, Espriu creates a work in which the puppet show farce become an elegiacal reflection.
