Abstract

This thesis is presented as a collection of published works, which have helped to fill a gap in the literature on collecting and the history of textiles and clothing in Catalonia. Its main purpose is to illustrate the importance of textile manufacturing in Catalan culture and society and its relevance to the Catalan economy. The rediscovery of our textile heritage has paved the way for further study and research through which to fully appreciate the value of this delicate commodity, identify the collectors behind the creation of our current textile museums, chart the history of surviving Catalan textiles and clothing, learn about the companies responsible for their production and recover the terminology involved. The thesis, which has been compiled from research carried out in museums, archives, libraries, companies and private homes, drawing on the extensive documentation that accompanies our heritage collections, is organized in two main sections. The first focuses on textile collecting, a pursuit that emerged towards the end of the nineteenth century and which we have to thank for the museum pieces that are now accessible to researchers. Study of the historical literature on textiles and clothing and of exhibitions curated from the mid-nineteenth century onwards reveals how interest in textile collecting arose, how the most significant items in current collections came to be acquired, and how other important pieces found their way out of Spain, looking at the creation of the two foremost Catalan textile museums – in Barcelona and Terrassa – and the building of their collections. The second section, which comprises several individual texts, reflects research carried out into Catalonia’s textile history, as viewed through the surviving heritage. The first text, which focuses on textiles produced at the turn of the seventeenth century, examines the historical context and the types of textiles that typify the period. It contains a glossary of textile terms dating from the end of the seventeenth century to 1714 that was published as part of the book Indumentària. Barcelona 1700, edited by Albert Garcia Espuche. The following texts stem from the study of various types of industrial sample books, which shed light on the materials, techniques and designs used over the years and on the history of the companies that produced them. Research into the history of Marieta, petit negoci tèxtil – the leading textile design firm in Catalonia in the period 1980-2000 – together with analysis of its full product catalogue reveals the drive of a group of artists who played a role in reinventing Catalan textile design after the years of the dictatorship. The text La Memòria dels telers takes a similar look at the history, typology and designs that characterise the Catalan textile heritage of the twentieth century. Finally, two texts on artistic fabrics produced with the Jacquard system reveal the levels of excellence achieved by Catalan textile schools and companies in the execution of this particular technique, taking us through a gallery of portraits, religious scenes and other designs of immense value. The overall collection of works that make up this thesis covers a period that runs from the turn of the seventeenth century through to end of the twentieth, a broad historical perspective through which we learn about the textile heritage of our country, its techniques, artists and designs, the collectors who preserved them, and the creation of the principal textile museums in Catalonia today.
