Abstract

En la sociedad postmoderna, la búsqueda de la identidad se ha convertido en uno de los puntos clave (Elliott, 1998) y el consumo es un instrumento vital para construirla, al estar más vinculado al intercambio de significados que a la satisfacción de necesidades fisiológicas. El consumo es un mecanismo simbólico que aporta significados coherentes y útiles para reflejar una identidad, permite a uno diferenciarse de los demás, actúa como marcador de género y status social, genera sentimiento de pertenencia a una comunidad y comunica cómo es uno a los demás (Belk, 1988; Cova & Cova, 2002; Douglas & Isherwood, 1979; Elliott & Wattanasuwan, 1998; Muniz & OʼGuinn, 2001; Schouten, McAlexander & Koenig, 2002). Propósito de esta investigación La intención de esta tesis es abordar cómo el individuo postmoderno afronta la construcción de la identidad a través del consumo simbólico. Se crea y valida un modelo de construcción de la identidad postmoderna a través del consumo simbólico, y para ello se ha actualizado el proceso de creación de significado simbólico. Metodología Cualitativa, se realizan entrevistas en profundidad saturando la muestra al llegar a 19 creativos publicitarios junior (Grounded Theory). Aportaciones Esta tesis aporta a la disciplina del comportamiento de consumidor un mayor conocimiento sobre el rol que juega el consumo simbólico en la construcción de la identidad postmoderna de un individuo. Para la industria del marketing y la publicidad el modelo de construcción de la identidad puede convertirse en una herramienta que permita enriquecer el conocimiento sobre el consumidor y su relación con las marcas (sobre todo, aquellas identidades del público que estén vinculadas al estilo de vida). En la educación del creativo, al conocer las motivaciones, los miedos y los conflictos de identidad a los que deben hacer frente puede facilitar el proceso de captación y el desarrollo del nuevo talento en la industria. De forma similar, la universidad y la escuela creativa podrán diseñar un itinerario curricular específico adaptado a las necesidades de la formación creativa y, sobre todo, psicológica del futuro creativo junior.


In postmodern society, the search for identity has become one of the key points (Elliott, 1998) and consumption is vital instrument to build it, being more tied to the exchange of meanings to the satisfaction of physiological needs. Consumption is a symbolic mechanism that provides consistent and useful meanings to reflect an identity, allowing to differentiate themselves, acting as a gender and social status marker, generating a sense of belonging to a community and how one communicates to others (Belk, 1988; Cova & Cova, 2002; Douglas & Isherwood, 1979; Elliott & Wattanasuwan, 1998; Muniz & OʼGuinn, 2001; Schouten, McAlexander & Koenig, 2002). Purpose of this research The intention of this thesis is to address how the postmodern individual facing the identity‘s construction through symbolic consumption. A model a postmodern identity’s construction through symbolic consumption has been created and validated. At the same time, we have to updated the process of creating symbolic meaning. Methodology Qualitative in-depth interviews are conducted. The sample was saturated when 19 junior creative advertising were reached (Grounded Theory). Contributions This thesis contributes to the discipline of consumer behaviour giving more knowledge about the role played by symbolic consumption in the construction of postmodern identity. For the industry of marketing and advertising, this model could be an strategic tool to enrich the knowledge of the consumer and their relationship with brands (especially those identities from the audience that are linked to lifestyle’s identities). In the creative education, after understanding the motivations, fears and conflicts of how creative juniors deal in the identity’s construction, this information could contribute to facilitate the process of acquisition and development of new talent in the industry. Similarly, college and creative school curriculum could design a specific itinerary tailored to the creative training and psychological needs.
