This thesis studied the spiritual dimension in the human’s psyche from two different perspectives. On the one hand, it studied the personality traits of a non-traditional spiritual group attending a well-defined New Age course in Spain. The Temperament and Character Inventory-Revised was used to identify the personality traits of a sample of 42 attendees of a New Age course for personal growth and compared them with those of 41 community controls with comparable age, sex, and academic levels. It also studied whether time of attendance to the course had an effect on the character dimensions. On the other hand, this thesis studied the feasibility of using the Jesus Prayer as a psychological intervention for a Spanish population. Specifically, it studied the effects of a two-month intervention with the Jesus Prayer among psychological symptoms and personality in a purposive sample of 10 middle aged Catholics. It also studied the Jesus Prayer’s short-term effects on transient mood states. The primary researcher applied the collaborative inquiry method for participants to learn the Jesus Prayer in a collaborative self-directed way in order to avoid taking the role of a religious expert. The first study obtained a distinctive personality profile for non-traditional spiritual people consisting of extremely high scores in Self-Transcendence and high scores in Novelty Seeking, along with lower scores in AH1-Anticipatory Worry, RD1-Sentimentality, RD4-Dependence and P1-Eagerness of effort and higher scores in CO5-Pure Heartedness subscales. Overall results allowed for defining the non-traditional spiritual group as spiritual, creative, adventurous, uninhibited, independent, and honest. The analysis of correlations between the character dimensions and time of attendance to the New Age course showed that Self-Transcendence can be partially trained. The second study showed that a short-term intervention with the Jesus Prayer had a strong effect on tension-anxiety and fatigue-inertia mood states, which suggests that the prayer has a high potential for regulating the imbalances of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. When taking into account the effect sizes, the study also showed that the prayer may potentially exert positive effects on depression, anger, and confusion. On the other hand, a two-month intervention with the Jesus Prayer had positive effects on Interpersonal Sensitivity and Phobic Anxiety psychological symptoms, which indicated that the Jesus Prayer may be of great support for improving social interactions and symptoms of hypersensitivity. The study also explored and discussed the possibility that longer interventions with the Jesus Prayer may have an effect among personality. Finally, a third article described the potential for using the collaborative inquiry method to research spiritual interventions. It showed that this method created a highly prolific framework stimulating participants to share their subjective experiences with the Jesus Prayer, to propose some actions to further explore the prayer, and to suggest some ways for better adhering to the Jesus Prayer. The analysis of the subjective accounts revealed that, in addition to having a strong mindful component, the Jesus Prayer has its unique features such as fostering a feeling of being protected and supported by a higher divine entity.
