Abstract

The main objective of this dissertation is to deepen the mirror, the body and identity as crucial themes in the construction of meaning in the novel "Ifigenia" by Teresa de la Parra (1924). This study aims to demonstrate that the evolution experienced by the main character is achieved every time she looks at the mirror. The mirror's reflection gives the character a new identity. It will be shown that the mirror acts as proof of that identity, which will be constantly changing as it is an endless work in process. This is the fundamental narrative process as through this premise Teresa de la Parra sets the main character and consequently the whole network of events in the novel. The thesis is divided into four chapters: Chapter I will be a preamble to present the author herself and how she was seen by her contemporaries. It also establishes the methodology and it explains the concepts that will be developed throughout the work and it starts approaching the novel through Venezuelan and Latin American criticism. In Chapter II we will take a closer look to the character through her reflection in the mirror. At each appearance in the mirror there are new thresholds and doors unfolding; once these are passed the character is connected with a new identity. In chapter III the importance of beauty throughout the work is shown. We will take a brief tour of its history through time, in the life of the author and perform an analysis of the character and her environment to determine how the " myth of beauty " influences the heroin’s identity. In Chapter IV the effects of aromas will be linked to emotions. Perfumes and scents have a special relevance in the novel, as they influence the outcome of the work. An approach to the history of perfume will be made to show which elements can be found in the novel. The scent will also be linked to the identity of the main character, since it works as her mirror and reflection. It will be proven that smells bring awareness to the main character, and this will be key for the outcome of the novel. The perfume also acts as a mark, it is the expression of the subtleties of the soul and a device that elevates feelings to the point of being another liberating element that gives power in the domestic sphere, in the prison of the room where the character can write, read and fly away from her reality.
