Abstract

The predictive capacity of the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), the Achievement Goal Theory (AGT) and some behavioural variables related to Exercise Intention (EI) and Exercise Behaviour (EB) were investigated in a sample of 151 members of a fitness center (average age 38.93 years, standard deviation 11.78). The questionnaires measured the following variables: For the TPB: EI, Behavioural Attitude (BA), Subjective Norm (SB), Perceived Behavioural Control (PBC); and Behavioural Beliefs (BB), Normative Beliefs (NB) and Control Beliefs (CB) -facilitators and barriers. For the AGT: Ego (EO) and Task Orientation (TO); Ego (EC) and Task Climate(TC). For the behavioural variables, Previous Behaviour (PB) and Future Behaviour (FB) of exercise. We found the following significant relations supported by the TPB: The FB with the EI and the PBC; the EI with the BA and with the PBC; the BA with the BB; the SN with the NB; the PBC with the CB facilitators and with the CB barriers. The AGT presents the following relations between its variables: the TC correlates positively with the TO and negatively with the EC; the TO in turn correlates negatively with the EC. The EC, in addition to the aforementioned relation with the TC, correlates positively with the EO. In connection to the relation of the variables of both theories we found that the TC correlates positively with the EI, the BA, the PBC, the BB, the NB and the CB facilitators; the EC does it negatively with the BA and the CB facilitators and positively with the CB barriers; furthermore, the TO is related positively to the EI, the BA, the BB, the NB and the CB facilitators. The PB correlates positively with the FB (this being the highest correlation found in this analysis), with the BI, with the BA and with the PBC and negatively with the CB barriers. The results of the regression analysis showed that the variables with higher capacity of prediction over EI are the BA and the PBC; whereas those that have bigger capacity of prediction on EB were the PB and the PBC -since PB was capable of explaining on its own 46% of the variance. It is necessary to emphasize that the persons BA towards the exercise plays a key role in the prediction of member's EI of continuing doing exercise.
