power of attorney".
Our aim is to contrastively analyse the notarized document in Spanish and English from the perspective of applied linguistics and genre analysis, in order to create translation tools and resources that ease the complementary task of law translators and lawyers.
Firstly, a theoretical study on textual linguistics, genre and comparative law is carried out; besides the methodology used. Then, an empirical descriptive analysis over the differences and similarities of the genres "poder notarial vs. power of attorney" is undertaken. A socioprofesional comparison between the Spanish Notary and the Irish Notary Public is also presented. Furthermore, the two catalogues of documents are shown. Finally, both genres are discussed by means of the NotGentt method of analysis.
In conclusion, in spite of the existing conceptual divergences between the Common Law and Civil Law traditions, and its consequent translation restrictions, legal “representation” fulfils a similar communicative purpose in both systems.
