This thesis focuses on those caves, groves and mountains which have been identified as natural cult places in Celtiberia between 2nd c. BC - 2nd c. AD. Our aim is to provide their formal and functional description, as well as to describe how social and political instability changed their functionality and essence.
The loss of irreplaceable data due to the alteration of the archaeological context of sacred caves, groves and mountains has determined the official characterization of these Celtiberian natural cult places. This handicap has been surpassed through different methods. First of all, the analysis of the historical landscape has provided new data by describing the interaction of these natural cult places with their surroundings at different geographic scales. Secondly, we applied in our catalogue a theoretical model, specially designed to identify in ancient landscapes different types of sacred places in nature, so as to obtain more information about Celtiberian natural cult places. This model justifies the sacredness of a natural feature or place by gathering information from the most diverse specialties (geography, history, philology, ethnography, etc.). Finally, the former geographical area of study was broadened in order to describe the most distinctive features of Celtiberian natural cult places by comparing them with the very same type of sanctuaries settled in the nearest Celtic and Iberian cultural areas.
In conclusion, the results achieved have allowed us to widen and develop the previous description of each Celtiberian natural cult place and each typology analysed here; as well as to propose new hypothesis which need to be archaeologically confirmed by future studies.
