In this doctoral research I studied how the atacameños indegenous communities, in the Atacama desert (northern Chile), are managing the cultural heritage whitin their territories. I focuse on two central aspects, in one hand the economic value and the touristic uses of these heritage resources. Also I explain the impacts it's having the use of cultural heritage with touristic purposes in the atacameños ethnogenesis process.
I argue that tourism is having a performative role in atacameños culture, which involved the reincorporation and reinvention of cultural elements that were unused.
In this research it used a qualitative methodology which involved two seasons of fieldwork in which they have conducted semi-structured and open interviews with key informants. Also it performed participative observation in four communities who are developed tourism projects both in the Salar Atacama and in the territory of Alto Loa.
