This PhD thesis corresponds to a multidisciplinary study on Bonnemaisonia species in the Iberian Peninsula. The research integrates the traditional descriptive taxonomy and study of life history with current techniques of molecular biology and genetics, such as nuclear DNA quantification.
In the Iberian Peninsula, the genus Bonnemaisonia is represented by B. hamifera, B. asparagoides and B. clavata. The taxonomic study provided data about the morphology, anatomy, reproduction and phenology of these species. This information was essential to resolve the taxonomic problems of B. asparagoides and B. clavata, and allowed us to update the chorology of the three Iberian species.
Life history studies using in vitro cultures in germination chambers in controlled conditions allow us to obtain and describe the different generations in the life history of B. asparagoides and B. clavata. To confirm the alternation of nuclear phases as well as the existence and position of the meiosis (the existence of which until now was questioned), studies of the genome size were carried out.
Bonnemaisonia hamifera is a species that has features in common with the genera Asparagopsis and Bonnemaisonia, both in terms of the life history and their reproductive and vegetative characters. The molecular phylogeny of the Bonnemaisoniaceae was studied in order to verify its systematic position and in turn provide a better understanding of the intergeneric relationships in this group. This study provided, in some cases, useful molecular characters to verify the validity of taxonomic and reproductive anatomical characters traditionally used.
