<I>"Science, society and territorial planning in the institution of the lazaretto"<br/><br/>In my doctoral research, I study the lazaretto and the wider quarantine institution from its foundation, with the appearance of the major epidemics in the Middle Ages, to the end of the pre-bacteriological era. I give priority to the bases on which this protective, sanitary mechanism was formed and to the evolution of the institution, in different countries, throughout the specified time scale. With this aim in mind, I have surveyed, on the one hand, the different medical conceptions regarding the emergence of epidemics and their spread amongst populations and territories. Also, I have analysed the corpus of knowledge which surrounded the formation of the quarantine system. This corpus made up of the ideas of medical science and the network of popular concepts about diseases and prophylactic practices was not homogenous and in turn this gave rise to the variety within quarantine practice and regulation. Furthermore, I focus on a whole series of spatial, territorial and morphological aspects deriving from its functions in society. Thus, I present a taxonomy of lazarettos in which I take account of morphological, aesthetic, cultural and scientific factors (in addition to chronological and spatial ones). The resultant models of this classification are as follows: a) the 'Renaissance' lazaretto (with its appearance in the Veneto and the Duchy of Milan in the fifteenth and sixteenth-centuries); b) the 'Enlightenment' lazaretto (with examples in Italy, Spain and France in the eighteenth and early-nineteenth-centuries); c) the 'Pavilion' lazaretto (emerging in late-eighteenth century Europe and current until the early-twentieth-century); d) the 'Romantic' lazaretto (specific to the United States and Canada and in operation throughout the nineteenth century). Finally, I look at the lazaretto with regard to the city and the creation of networks of epidemic protection. For this, and with the help of three case studies (Ragusa, Marseilles and Livorno), I undertake a survey of the problems of the position of the lazaretto within an urban context and the role it played in the wider framework of urban functions, always bearing in mind its ultimate purpose as part of the infrastructure of sanitary protection. Regarding the creation of quarantine networks, I have made a summary study of the different stages of the configuration of these defensive systems, from the municipal to the state level. Thus, in short, one observe a progressive regulating convergence and centralisation of the operations adhering in different ways, in each country.</I>
