The aim of the present study is to compare the volume gain around dental implants when a subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) from palate or tuberosity is used randomly. The most studied donor area for soft tissue augmentation has been the autogenous connective tissue from the palate. However recent studies has affirmed that tuberosity tissue may possess better tissue qualities for soft tissue volume augmentation.
It has been shown that tuberosity connective tissue is more dense with less fat and glandular tissue. Therefore, it could be speculated that this firmer tissue will have less shrinkage and achieve more soft tissue gain.
In the present study 32 patients with 36 implants with localized volume deficiency has been included and received randomly a SCTG from palate or tuberosity. Measurements using an intraoral optical scan has been done at baseline and 3 months. Also 20 samples were obtained at baseline for immunohistochemistry and descriptive histological analysis.
In conclusion both groups obtained volume gain at 3 months. No statistical significant differences were found. Even though a tendency of better results was observed for patients who received SCTG from tuberosity.
