This dissertation aims to describe the main processes leading to interaction between safety representatives and workers and the factors influencing it, as well as analysing its effects. Adopting a multi-method approach, two qualitative studies were performed -one focused on prevention delegates and the other focused on workers- and a quantitative study using data from the VII Spanish Working Conditions Survey (2011). The qualitative studies showed that the interaction between safety representatives and workers is very limited and affected by a number of factors related to the context, to the firm, to safety representatives and to workers. Also, from the workers’ discourse a widespread lack of knowledge regarding the role of the safety representatives and their functions emerged. The quantitative study analysed the association between knowledge of the existence of safety representatives and preventive action levels protecting workers. No differences were observed between workers unaware of the safety representatives’ existence and those reporting not to have. Instead, workers reporting safety representatives were more protected by preventive action than those unaware of their existence. Interaction is a factor determining the effectiveness of prevention delegates in different ways. It is connected with resources empowering safety representatives, such as information to perform their function or workers’ support and it has implications on workers’ health, for example, through lower information levels regarding rights and occupational health.
