Through a detailed study about what hovercraft has represented in the field of the very short sea carriage, I intend to find out its economic viability as passenger & vehicle transportation means far certain sea passages, justifying the reason for its very low deployment by shipping lines as an option to the current high speed crafts (catamarans & mono-hulls) that nowadays monopolize the short sea passenger traffic.
In this thesis, it is described how they arose, how they are kept hovering and moving over the surface and also that they are the only amphibious vehicle in the market, how they manoeuvre and what are the main structural parts. To achieve this, I visited and spent a few days in Ryde, where Hovertravel, the major and only current hovercraft operator, is established. While there I was taught by Hovertravel pilots and some fleet staff. The analysis of several commercial projects based on hovercrafts also helped me a lot on its development.
lts meter-oceanographic restrictions (wave height & wind speed), its payload limitations (very sensitive to the weight parameter), its high maintenance costs (skirt and fingers are continuously affected by wear and tear), together with its very high acquisition cost are its major weaknesses that up to now have prevented them to compete with catamarans and mono hulls in the current high speed sea carriage market.
However, the simple fact of being the quickest advanced marine vehicle (easily they exceed 40 knots), the fact of requiring almost no shore-side structures, its great manoeuvrability, its good level in environmental sustainability (they hardly produce wake wash and its noise levels under sea surface are minimal), together with its amphibious condition, led me to make a preliminary study about what could be the operating cost of an 88 pax hovercraft doing the lbiza-Formentera string versus an 88 pax catamaran vessel , obtaining a very positive result.
In this thesis I have covered its environmental effects, international regulations (HSC codes) which need to be complied with. I have also analyzed the hovercraft models with a higher impact in the passenger transportation market, from the SR.N4
(Princess Anne & Princess Margaret) that crossed The Channel in the SOies & 90ies to the current AP1-88/100 engaged in The Solent crossing between Southsea & Ryde, without disregarding the BHT-130 "Suna X' & "Solent Express". To summarise I emphasize the new and challenging project of Grillan Hoverwork, "The 12000TD hovercraft", expected to become operative in the first half of 2016 replacing the current AP1-88/100 hovercrafts, this project could imply the revival of these advanced marine vehicles.
In the "Appendixes" included you will see the U.K. hovercraft main regulations so called "The Hovercraft General Order 1972", along with the passenger ticket contracting conditions of Hovertravel. Furthermore two self-explanatory abstracts complete it.
Finally, in conclusion, I have defined the strengths and weaknesses far these vehicles ending with the high expectations produced by the new Griffon-Hoverwork project as the most challenging alternative of a quick & sustainable transportation mode in comparison with the present catamarans and mono-hulls.
