The present project is aimed to analyze the steel structure from an evolutionary point of view. The study¿s context has been the 20th century on the Catalan capital city in order to see how the historical, normative and methodological changes have set a new expression for the city.
Once a division of the century in specific periods has been made, we have started to analyze the historical context. A civil infrastructure, a set of regulations or even a calculation methodology have to be perfectly set in a context; in fact, it would be pointless to talk about the previous issues if we had not previously taken into consideration the characteristics of the time when they were created. Actually, it would be difficult to conceive them in other situations than the ones they were created under.
Once the historical field has been referenced, the calculation methods as well as the different sets of regulations that have been relevant in that period have been analyzed. In addition, we have also taken into consideration the technological procedures and their subsequent transformation. Provided that the majority of the teaching was done in architecture and engineering schools, the present study incorporates teaching material as well as several examples that were considered at that time in order to complete the information of the project. Moreover, all the items presented for each period can be observed in the different structures we have presented, especially the details regarding the methodology and the official set of regulations that was used.
In some cases, we have already pointed out that a great part of the material has been either lost or its present state is clearly deficient. Indeed, in addition to raise further difficulties to the project, this has clearly highlighted the fact that these sources have been often disregarded, despite having directly or indirectly configured the present situation.
