In the present doctoral thesis, the indirect defence mechanisms of two citrus rootstocks with different levels of susceptibility for the herbivor Tetranychus urticae (the most resistant, Citrus aurantium, and the most susceptible, C. reshni) will be analysed using behavioural assays with the three phytoseids predators of the red mite with different levels of specialisation in their diet. Moreover, volatiles associated with the spider mite and Cleopatra mandarin induced by T. urticae-infested sour orange have been characterized. Secondly, the study of the key pest T. urticae has been deepened, specifically studying its microbiome, since it has been shown that symbiont bacteria can influence the biological parameters of arthropods, one of the key species is Wolbachia, Finally, the response of the two citrus genotypes has been characterized when they are infested by P. latus to elucidate the defenses, the volatile profile and the molecular mechanisms involved in this interaction.
