La tesi planteja dos objectius:
This thesis raises two objectives:
1. To understand social interaction and friendships among deaf teenagers.
- To describe the experiences, the concepts and the values of friendship.
- To analyze the sociometric relationships in the context of group classes.
- To analyze the themes of conversation and the usual interlocutors.
- To identify the variables which influence friendships among deaf teenagers.
2. To establish whether similarities and differences exist between deaf and hearing adolescents, with regard to friendship and social interaction.
The variables which have been analyzed are distributed into two blocks: influential or independent variables and researched dimensions or dependent variables. Within the first block we have analyzed:
- Socio-demographic variables (age, sex, social class, number of siblings and degree of deafness)
- Psycho-linguistic variables (level of language and communication and personality traits)
- Educational variables (family educational background, academic characteristics and extracurricular activities)
In the second block we have analyzed:
- The experiences, concepts and values of friendship
- The sociometric position within the group/class
- Subjects of conversation and interlocutors
This thesis is based on the hypothesis that the different independent variables influence the researced dimensions or dependent variables.
The methods to obtain the data consist in conducting an individual interview with each of the adolescents in the study on the subject of friendship, a sociogram of the various groups/classes which include both deaf and hearing teenagers and various questionnaires to be filled out by the pupils and teachers with regard to the variables of the study.
With regard to the participants, the sample consists of 20 deaf and 20 hearing teenagers, all of whom attend compulsory secondary education or post-compulsory schooling (ESO and Bachillerato). By sex, there are 20 boys and 20 girls, ranging from 12 to 19 years old. The deaf teenagers suffer either severe or profound deafness.
The main conclusions obtained are as follows:
1. The results show, in general, a significant normalization in friendships and social relationships between deaf teenagers and both other deaf or hearing teenagers.
2. We have identified a minority group of deaf teenagers, in the older age group, with less social interaction.
3. Among the different independent variables analyzed, the majority show no statistical significance with regard to dependent variables; only pragmatic aspects of language, by which I mean communication, development of conversation, show a clear influence on friendship and social position in class among deaf pupils.
4. Establishing friendships with other deaf teenagers may be especially important for those boys and girls with less developed social lives.
Finally, this thesis highlights different educational implications which may improve the social interaction between deaf teenagers and their peers, such as:
1. Full-time mainstream education, throughout compulsory school age, with grouping of deaf pupils in the same educational cycle.
2. The use of oral language as the means of common communication between deaf and hearing pupils in class.
3. The methodology used by teachers and their ability to empathize with deaf pupils.
4. The importance of the family in relation to building deaf teenagers ́ independence.
