Abstract

The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of Leemos en Pareja, an educational programme based on peer tutoring, about reading comprehension and reading fluency in the diversity of the classroom. The study was carried out with a sample of 127 students in 2nd and 5th grade of elementary school and a comparison group of 120 students of the same education level, and 8 teachers who were responsible of carrying out the experience. In order to determine whether this method benefits knowledge construction of the students, we were also applied the method to a group of 11 students that required reading comprehension support. We achieved the objectives and obtained answers to the research question presented in this paper, through an almost experimental study with the comparison group, along with the follow up of the process of the working sessions, particularly with the analysis of the interaction of the sub-sample of 14 pairs of students. The quantitative results show meaningful differences between the pre-test and post-test measurement of the students that were part of the intervention group, including reading comprehension and reading fluency. The analysis of the interaction shows that the improvement was based on the scaffolded support given by the tutor student to the tutee, when the latter was not able to answer in an autonomous way to the questions brought up in the text. The mediation mechanisms carried out by the tutors made reference to clues and linking up of ideas, which had a positive impact on both members of the couple. Regarding the case of the student sub-sample that presented initial reading comprehension difficulties, there was meaningful evidence of statistic progress in the rate of reading comprehension and reading fluency between the pre-test and post-test measurement. In this sense, it is outstanding the mediation performed by the tutor students to enable learning to their vulnerables classmates, adjusting the structure of the program and offering scaffolded help, in relation to the implementation of the clues and linking up of ideas for the construction of an answer. It has been shown that interventions made by the teacher with these students and the group in general, play an important role in the adjustment of the activity and the structure of the session that guarantees pair interactivity. In general, we attribute the improvements of reading comprehension to the usual activities that were developed in the classroom throughout the curriculum in conjunction with the actions prescribed by the program Leemos en Pareja, based on peer learning, where the tutor achieved learning through the mechanisms that promoted the learning of the classmate, and where the tutee received adjusted and permanent help from the tutor classmate. Regarding the students presenting reading comprehension difficulties, previous support from the tutor is required during the preparation of the activity in order to anticipate possible difficulties during the content activity development and the mediation that is made.
