El objeto de la presente tesis doctoral es la investigación de las principales particularidades lexicológicas y diatópicas de las designaciones de conceptos corporales de especial relevancia cognitiva, la 'mano' y los 'dedos'. El estudio constituye una caracterización parcial del área léxico-semántica del cuerpo humano a partir del examen de algunos atlas lingüísticos románicos. Se analiza, por tanto, la variación lingüística de este ámbito nocional en su contexto geográfico.
En el desarrollo de este trabajo, se ha pretendido (a) realizar un análisis léxico-conceptual tanto de tipo onomasiológico como semasiológico, es decir, estudiar el léxico del cuerpo humano como concepto fuente y como concepto meta; (b) comprobar las relaciones que se establecen entre la realidad y el cuerpo humano y averiguar cuáles son los mecanismos mediante los que se vinculan; (c) investigar si existe regularidad léxica en la categorización de la realidad mediante el cuerpo humano y en la conceptualización del cuerpo humano mediante la realidad; (d) y, finalmente, estudiar los patrones de motivación de este dominio conceptual.
En el primer capítulo, se describe el marco teórico elegido y se justifica su adopción para llevar a cabo el estudio. Se parte de la importancia que las disciplinas cognitivas otorgan al cuerpo en cualquiera de las acciones humanas desarrolladas cotidianamente, entre las cuales, destacan el lenguaje y la comunicación. La lingüística cognitiva, el experiencialismo y la teoría del embodiment determinan que el cuerpo humano es una de las principales vías de categorización de la realidad.
En el segundo capítulo, se exponen los objetivos de la investigación, se describe el modo en el que se ha seleccionado el corpus (694 formas léxicas extraídas de los atlas lingüísticos) y el método de análisis que se ha seguido para el estudio de los datos (análisis onomasiológico y semasiológico, cartografía motivacional, semántica cognitiva, estudio etimológico).
En el tercer capítulo, se analizan, desde una perspectiva onomasiológica, las distintas designaciones de los cinco dedos de la mano (pulgar, índice, corazón, anular y meñique) en las variedades románicas habladas en España a partir del examen de los atlas lingüísticos de este territorio (ALCyL, ALDC, ALEA, ALEANR, ALECant, ALeCMan, ALEICan, ALGa) y del "Atlas Lingüístico de la Península Ibérica" (ALPI). Desde un punto de vista cognitivo, se estudian las distintas designaciones que reciben los dedos de la mano como concepto meta y los diversos mecanismos de creación de las denominaciones. A partir del análisis, se advierte que los dedos están sujetos a un importante y diferente grado de variación léxica (dedo pulgar (43 formas), dedo índice (63 formas), dedo corazón (55 formas), dedo anular (89 formas) y dedo meñique (142 formas)) derivada de un conjunto de motivaciones que tienen origen, mayoritariamente, en procesos metafóricos y metonímicos (el tamaño, la posición, las canciones y retahílas infantiles, los nombres de parentesco, las aptitudes y cualidades de los dedos, las denominaciones genéricas, las creencias y costumbres populares).
Asimismo, desde una perspectiva semasiológica, en el tercer capítulo también se investigan las designaciones de cinco conceptos pertenecientes al dominio semántico de los animales (mantis religiosa, ciempiés, libélula, tijereta, oruga) partiendo de los datos que contiene el "Atlas Linguistique Roman" (ALiR). Se han estudiado las denominaciones de los animales que contienen voces mediante las que distintas lenguas románicas designan los dedos y la mano, por tanto, se han analizado, desde una perspectiva cognitiva, como concepto fuente. Del examen de los datos se deduce que la mayoría de estas designaciones de animales (esp. plegamanos 'mantis religiosa'; port. cortadedos 'ciempiés'; cat. rodadit 'libélula'; sard. isperramanu 'tijereta'; gall. arrancamanos 'oruga') se crean mediante un mismo procedimiento morfológico, pues la mayor parte poseen la estructura , y se originan debido a un conjunto de creencias maléficas derivadas del aspecto del insecto y del mal que se cree que puede crear en el ser humano.
La investigación llevada a cabo da cuenta de la existencia de diferencias entre las partes del cuerpo estudiadas en función de si se analizan como concepto fuente o como concepto meta; del contraste de los datos obtenidos en el estudio onomasiológico y semasiológico; de la existencia de unos patrones de creación léxica en los nombres de los conceptos estudiados; de la coexistencia de un conjunto de procedimientos panhipánicos y panrrománicos en la creación de nombres de partes del cuerpo; y del hecho de que la cultura popular, la metáfora y la metonimia son los tres motores de creación léxica de los nombres referidos a las partes del cuerpo estudiadas.

The aim of this dissertation is the research of the main diatopic and lexical particularities about the designation of body concepts with special cognitive relevance, the concepts of "hand" and "fingers". This study represents a partial characterization of the lexical-semantic area of the human body from the examination of some Romanic linguistic atlas. Therefore, it's the linguistic variation of this notional field in its geographic context what is analyzed here.
While this project was developed, it was intended to (a) carry out a lexical-conceptual analysis both onomasiologic and semasiologic. In other words, it was intended to study the lexis of the human body as a source concept and as a target concept; (b) check the relations established between reality and the human body, as well as finding out the mechanisms through which they are linked; (c) investigate if there is lexical regularity in the categorization of reality through the human body and in the conceptualization of the human body through reality; (d) and finally, study the motivation patterns of this conceptual domain.
In the first chapter, the chosen theoretical frame is described, and its choice to carry out this study is justified. The starting point is the importance that the cognitive disciplines give to the human body in any everyday human action, especially language and communication. Cognitive linguistics, experientialism and the embodiment theory determine that the human body is one of the main means of categorization of reality.
In the second chapter, the research objectives are exposed, and the way the corpus was chosen is described (the corpus comprises 694 lexical forms), along with the method of analysis employed for the data study (onomasiologic and semasiologic analysis, motivational cartography, cognitive semantics, etymological study).
In the third chapter, a onomasiologic perspective is adopted in order to analize the different designations of the five fingers in the human hand (thumb, index, middle, ring, and little finger) in the Romanic linguistic variations spoken in Spain from the examination of the linguistic atlas in this territory (ALCyL, ALDC, ALEA, ALEANR, ALECant, ALeCMan, ALEICan, ALGa), as well as from the "Atlas Lingüístico de la Península Ibérica" (ALPI). From a cognitive perspective, the different designations of the fingers as a target concept are analyzed, as well as the different name creation mechanisms. From this analysis, it is realized how fingers are subject to an important and different degree of lexical variation (thumb, 43 forms), (index, 63 forms), (middle, 55 forms) , (ring finger, 89 forms), and (little finger, 142 forms) which comes from a number of motivations whose origin is, mainly, metaphorical and metonymic processes (size, position, children's songs, kinship lexis, the skill and qualities of fingers, generic names, traditional customs and beliefs).
Likewise, in the third chapter there are five concepts belonging to the semantic domain of animals which is also analyzed from a semasiological perspective (praying mantis, centipede, dragonfly, earwig, and caterpillar) starting from the use of the data of the "Atlas Linguistique Roman" (ALiR). A study has been carried out about names of animals containing terms through which several Romanic languages denominate the fingers and the hand. Therefore, they have been analyzed as a source concept. Looking at the examination of data, it can be inferred that most of these designations of animals (Sp. plegamanos 'praying mantis'; Port. cortadedos 'centipede'; Cat. rodadit 'dragonfly'; Sard. isperramanu 'earwig'; Gal. arrancamanos 'caterpillar') are created by means of the same morphologic procedure, for most of them have the structure (V+N), and come into being due to some evil beliefs derived from the insect's appearance and the evil that could be transmitted to human beings.
The research done accounts for the following points: the existence of differences between the parts of the body included in this study, depending on their analysis as a source concept or as a target concept; the contrast between the data obtained from the onomasiological and semasiological study; the existence of a number of lexical creation patterns in the names of the studied concepts; the coexistence of a set of procedures Panhispanics and Panromanics in the naming of the body parts; and the fact that folklore, metaphor, and metonymy are the three sources of lexical creation for the related names of the body parts studied.
