Abstract

Between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, various versions of an adaptation of Historia de rebus Hispaniae (HrH) by Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada appeared in Catalonia. The adaptation dealt with in this study under the name of Crònica d'Espanya (CdE), of which versions in Latin and Catalan totalling seven are preserved, summarised the source while interpolating fragments of either original authorship or inspired in other works. The adaptation has traditionally been attributed to Pere Ribera de Perpinyà. This study sheds doubt on his authorship.
This thesis annotates the versions preserved and undertakes the analysis of each one: dating, authorship where known (i.e. Bernat Rovira, Guillem de Vallseca and Jaume Marquilles), distinctive features, specific interests, alternative sources, extension of genealogies, linguistic characterisation in the case of Catalans, and others. In addition, existing relationships among them are studied, as well as the deduction of necessary antecedents in the transmission of the work and the indication of groupings by affinity. The study of this transmission is the principal aim of this thesis. CdE falls within the ambit of "living texts" (textes vivants), that is, they are not reproduced under a fixed form. Instead, they are transmitted with the incorporation of adaptations, interpolations, extensions, and so on. The methodology I have followed tallies with this characteristic. For this reason, the treatment of certain fragments and specific aspects are analysed within the larger framework of the texts, the two Catalan translations preserved are set apart and their historiographic significance is assessed both in the case of the first version of the chronicle and the evolution as shown in successive versions.
Analysis of transmission enables us to establish contact with the background of medieval historiographic compilations and adaptations. The matter of this study ranges from methods of importation of phrases and concepts among texts to work on the ordinatio of the new work, including the treatment of rhetorical material in various versions, the degree of adaptation to genre patterns, or interventions found in the translations (with respect to both syntax and content) and the translation considerations arising from them. Within the panorama of medieval Catalan historiography, this thesis locates the chronicle in relation to coetaneous and subsequent production, brings to light the form of transmission in particular circles of civil life as regards jurists and clerks, and follows the process whereby the work outlives its prevalence and ceases to evolve in the latter half of the fifteenth century.
