Abstract

The history of the Inquisition is not easy to understand because the historical reality of these facts has always been totally or partially eclipsed by the image which the Inquisition established from its victims to its personnel, following its eyewitnesses or indirect witnesses of its acts throughout time.
The reality concerning the Inquisition has been warped with its image, an image influenced by the multiple mirrors through which it has been observed and judged. The first part of the thesis reviews those multiple mirrors: the mirror of the victims who directly suffered the Inquisitional repression; the mirror of the intellectuals who were solidary with the victims, from followers of Erasmus to the Age of Enlightenment; the travelling circus mirror; the imaginary symbolic mirror of the literary and artists. But the image of the Inquisition does not only come from observatories outside itself. The Inquisition seen from outside is always counterweighted by the view from the inside out, the view of the very inquisitors: the second part of the thesis is dedicated to this view which concludes with a new viewpoint - that of its own historians.
The objective of this thesis is not centred solely on the analysis of the various mirrors of the Inquisitional image, but rather, above all, to confront the two worlds: that of image and that of reality. We tackle this thoroughly in the third part of the thesis, centring on a certain geographical location: the Crown Federation of Aragón and in Catalonia, especially. In that area, the modern Inquisition was never able to overcome a certain conscience of bewilderment that could only be understood in the context of the origins of that modern Inquisition and of the contrasts of the new Inquisition with the old medieval Inquisition.
The central theme of this thesis is the idea that the image of the Inquisition was multi-defined because the inquisitorial identity was intentionally dark and ambiguous; and at the same time if the inquisitorial identity was dark, it was due to the fact that the Inquisition was interested in selling multiple, different and, on some occasions, even contradictory images of itself. Catalonia is where this inquisitorial strategy can clearly be appreciated. The third part of the thesis tackles the confrontation of the image with reality in the area of the Barcelona courts and on two levels: administrative and judicial. Firstly, the confrontational image - reality is recorded in the clear contradiction between the theoretical discourse of inquisitional archetypes, what it should be regarding Inquisitor and civil servants' behaviour, and the mediocre and corrupt reality of their daily conduct. Secondly, the confrontational image stands out from a distance that separates law, jurisdiction, and the use that the Inquisition made of presumed legitimacies, power or concrete power that the Inquisition exerted. The Inquisition's third power sheltered itself in the Holy Office's juridical ambiguity.
From an administrative viewpoint, one must bear in mind that the Inquisition in Catalonia was especially badly governed, due to its civil servants' weak conviction or due to the systematic torpedoing of the competitive powers at play. This Inquisition with great functional limitations provoked great uneasiness in the Council of the Supreme and central powers which generated inspection visits. They tried to cauterise those great functional limitations with diverse alternative technocrats. How did the model's virtual image come into conflict with the hard reality of a hardly manageable and especially chaotic society in the realm of the inquisitional administration? We dedicate the last chapter of this thesis to the history of this collision between image and reality, centring on the analysis of the administrative organism of the Holy Office and of the inspection visits, the notable occasion when it confronted the pre-established speech with the Court's everyday praxis. A collision which produced sparks and that decisively contributed to generating an evolution of the Inquisition towards more administratively severe positions such as the one of the Inquisition during Arce and Reinoso's term of office in the second half of the 17th century.
From the jurisdictional viewpoint, it is clear that the Catalonian Inquisition had to accept the fact that it had to move around not only between the great powers of Church and State, but also among joint autonomous powers on a larger scale (Generalitat) or more local (municipal), and undefined powers, such as that of the Audiencia. The Inquisition moved around a real mine field. The 1568 conflict between the representatives of the Generalitat and the Inquisitors is a good test that adequately reflects the jurisdictional image that is always subordinate to the real powers in each situation. Inquisitional or ecclesiastic policy? Whosever it was to decide. In the 1568 process, we can see that playing the ecclesiastical card clearly turned into playing the political one, in a manner radically contrary to the representatives of the Generalitat.
