Abstract

The Girona Symphonic Orchestra first performed a concert on the 5th of July 1929. The following autumn the orchestra undertook a small tour organized by musical associations in the towns of Palafrugell, Palamós, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Figueres, Sabadell and Reus. The orchestra’s conductor was Ismael Granero, a military musician who at the end of 1931 was assigned a new post in the Valencia region from where he originated. The new conductor was the composer Ricard Lamote de Grignon from Barcelona, who from summer 1932 onwards visited Girona periodically to conduct the orchestra. With him leading them, the group renewed its repertoire and went on taking part in the cultural life of the city. Despite financial problems and a lack of continuity, the orchestra survived until the start of the Spanish Civil War. The initial aim of this thesis is to analyse, from a musicological perspective, the development of an entity which, although it cannot be considered completely unknown, was unexplored in the majority of aspects. The material which can provide information is so widespread that a whole host of sources have been used: official documentation, concert programmes, press, private collections, letters, and personal memories. In this way, not only the evolution of their performances has been traced, but also the origin and the personal profile of its members together with the aesthetical world seen through the group’s repertoire and previous attempts to create similar orchestras in the same city. Thanks to this data collection about the Girona Symphonic Orchestra we can now study which interests it responded to, which social groups were behind it, and which models served as inspiration. The links it established with other civic organisations and with local politics along with its presence in the public life of the city and the dynamism of those in charge show that orchestral activity was a clear proof of a project of regeneration of collective life with a will extended to other social groups and which helped contribute to the dignification of music as a profession. On the other hand, the Girona Symphonic Orchestra was not an isolated case; in other Catalan cities other orchestral entities which shared a series of chronological and organisational similarities were created, fact that cannot be put down to coincidence. The slow process towards the normalization of musical life in Catalonia to bring it to the level of other European models began at the end of the 19th century, and was taken over later by the Noucentisme movement. Between the end of Primo de Rivera’s dictatorship and the beginning of the 2nd Republic, orchestras can be considered the fruit of that ideology. In a time of upheaval and change, they became institutions that projected a collective dimension of urban sociability.
