Abstract

In this research, the seismic response, the vulnerability and the expected damage in rein-forced concrete residential buildings, with irregular plants, are analyzed. This irregularity is mainly due to inbound and outbound areas at the corners and also to discontinuous diaphragms caused by this irregular geometry. Moreover, the influence that symmetries on several plants may have on the seismic performance is also studied. It is worth noting that these buildings and configurations are typical of the metropolitan area of Barquisimeto in Venezuela, where seismic hazard is important. Besides, buildings were projected according to the seismic code of the country. Thus, a specific evaluation method is proposed. The method is based on classical static and dynamic analyses, but it also takes into account the three-dimensionality of the problem. The static study includes the analysis of initial stiffness, capacity curves and global and relative displacements. The results of the static analysis are then checked with the ones coming from the incremental dynamic analysis. For the dynamic analyses three recorded and three artificial accelerograms are used. Those six accelerograms where selected in such a way that they are compatible with the geological and geotechnical characteristics of the area and also their response spectra are compatible with the design spectrum provided in the seismic code for high seismic hazard zones. In order to take into account the three-dimensionality of the problem, accelerograms are applied to the two X and Y axes ac-cording to suitable combinations, thus obtaining the IDA envelope curve, the displacements as functions of the peak ground acceleration and the torsion and rotation of the vertical resistant axes. A fair good correlation between the results of the static and dynamic analyses is obtained. On the other hand, a fragility analysis and the assessment of expected damage is performed by means of the well-known method proposed in the framework of the Risk-UE project and also by means of a recently proposed new fragility model and new damage index based on the capacity curve. The obtained results are as follow: i) the torsional moments in resistant axes nearby to the inbound areas are greater than the ones in distant resistant axes; (ii) in buildings with internal gaps, torsion increases in asymmetric structures and it decreases in models with symmetry in plant; (iii) expected damage is greater in irregular buildings; for these buildings and for the likely seismic actions in the area, damage states between Severe and Collapse damage states are expected; however, the expected damage states for regular buildings are significantly lower. Finally, an important conclusion of this work is that it is worthwhile to review the irregularity conditions in the seismic code, since buildings with an allowable design irregularity show an unsatisfactory seismic behavior.
