Abstract

The PhD Thesis “Didactic mathematical knowledge of a teacher in the context of the development of numerical thinking” is a contribution to the research on Didactics of Mathematics for the teacher’s professional development. The theoretical frame considers three dimensions of complexity in the professional knowledge of the teacher: the content, the pedagogy and the students. The thesis studies a case of a primary school teacher during a formative intervention that lasts 3 years. The study aims to answer the following questions: Which didactic mathematical knowledge on the topic of multiplication can be observed when a teacher is asked to reflect on the teaching practice during a formative intervention? How does this formative intervention affect the development of such knowledge? The answer to the first question is done in three phases. The first phase identifies the relevant mathematical contents on the topic of multiplication. The study shows that along the duration of the intervention the teacher introduces more relevant mathematical contents, illustrating an increment of her mathematical knowledge. However, it also shows that some fundamental conceptualisations of the multiplication are weak or absent. The second phase decomposes the didactic mathematical knowledge using a codification grounded on data. This leads to a preliminary characterisation of didactic knowledge both in terms of teaching practices and the understanding of the students. The study finds an increasing use of different teaching strategies as well as a reflexion on the choice of what to teach and how the teach it. With respect to the students, the teacher becomes slightly aware of the relationship between the content and the students’ understanding. The third phase defines four development indicators in order to identify changes in the teacher’s approach to the didactic content. The study identifies progress in the professional development of the teacher that heavily relies on the reflexion and the teaching practice. With respect to the second question, the study shows that each formative instrument increases one or more of the development indicators as long as such an instrument is considered in conjunction to the rest of instruments. In conclusion this study shows that the success of a formative intervention relies on the ability of provoking questions over the teaching practice that will be later incorporated to the practice itself and will lead to more questions and new practices, creating an spiral of development on the didactics of mathematical knowledge.
