El pensamiento religioso de Tirso de Molina

Abstract

El título de esta tesis doctoral, El pensamiento religioso de Tirso de Molina, tiene como meta conjugar los dos aspectos de esa personalidad tan enigmática aún que es Gabriel Téllez: la de consumado autor teatral con la de profundo conocedor de la Teología de su tiempo, intentando establecer las relaciones que entre ambas se producen y que se materializan en su obras. Pero debemos tener en cuenta que sobre la biografía de Gabriel Téllez existen todavía aspectos que desconocemos, siendo uno los estudios teológicos que realizó. Por ello los objetivos que nos planteamos a la hora de realizar esta investigación son: 1) descubrir cuál era el contexto histórico y religioso contemporáneo a Tirso de Molina, así como los estudios que un fraile de la Merced de los siglos XVI y XVII debía realizar para elaborar la biografía intelectual del autor. 2) Analizar las obras de materia religiosa de Tirso de Molina, comparándolas entre ellas y poniéndolas en relación con los estudios que el mercedario realizó, así como con el espíritu religioso y teológico de su época. 3) A la luz de los resultados de los dos puntos anteriores, identificar los grandes temas religiosos que se hallan en las obras del mercedario, esto es, encontrar el sistema de pensamiento que sustenta las obras tirsianas de asunto sacro. Para alcanzar estos objetivos, la metodología empleada es la siguiente. La investigación parte de un sistema de paulatina concretización, de lo más general a lo particular, pues se parte del estudio de la Orden de la Merced, consultando las fuentes bibliográficas mercedarias, como crónicas, historias, constituciones, etc., pero también de los puntos más destacados del concilio de Trento y de su extensión al ámbito español, y de la renovación teológica que se produce en el siglo XVI con su epicentro en la Universidad de Salamanca. Todo ello, junto con los datos biográficos que tenemos de la vida de fray Gabriel Téllez nos permiten esbozar su biografía intelectual. Posteriormente, en un segundo nivel de concretización, realizamos la lectura y análisis de las obras religiosas de Tirso de Molina: los cinco dramas bíblicos, los tres autos de probada autoría y los tres que ofrecen dudas, las quince comedias hagiográficas, los dos dramas teológicos, la Historia, el Deleitar aprovechando y la fragmentaria obra sobre la vida de Santa María de Çervellón. El análisis nos ofrece una serie de puntos de confluencia que serán los que guiarán nuestro estudio. Finalmente, mediante el estudio previo histórico y religioso, y el análisis de las obras, hallamos una serie de resultados o conclusiones sobre el pensamiento teológico y religioso que sustenta las obras del mercedario, y que puede sintetizarse en los siguientes puntos: a) el mercedario es un defensor de los valores de su Orden. b) Si la Orden Franciscana y la Jesuita es alabada en sus obras, fray Gabriel evita pronunciarse sobre la dominica. c) La Caridad es uno de los temas más importantes de sus obras. d) La obra de Tirso se apoya teológicamente en Santo Tomás de Aquino, aunque hay otras influencias. e) El autor defiende de manera constante el catolicismo y lo expuesto en Trento. f) La Virgen tiene un papel destacado en sus obras, que se ve en los personajes femeninos que actúan como prefiguraciones y evocaciones, y en la mariogamia y mariofanía. g) Sus obras, siguiendo el espíritu tridentino, siempre tienen una interpretación neotestamentaria, que puede verse en referencias, evocaciones y símbolos. h) Tirso defiende el cristianismo primitivo y rechaza el código de la comedia de honor áurea por ser contrario a la ley divina. i) Hay influencia de la Mística en algunas de sus obras. j) La misión catequética, relacionada con las intervenciones divinas y con el uso de otras artes, puede verse en casi todas sus obras.

The title of this doctoral thesis, The religious thought of Tirso de Molina, has the goal to combine the two aspects of such an enigmatic personality that define Gabriel Téllez: that of a consummate playwright with and that of being a deep connoisseur of the theology of his time, trying to establish the relationship between both of them that is also present in his works. But we must note that there are still aspects that we do not know about his biography; for example, the theological studies that he carried out. For this reason the objectives that we are looking for in this research are the following: 1) Discover the historical and religious context which was contemporary to Tirso de Molina, as well as the studies that a friar of the Merced of the XVI and XVII centuries had to do in order to elaborate the intellectual biography of the author. 2) Analyze Tirso de Molina's works on religious matter, comparing them and relating them to the studies that the Mercedarian carried out, as well as the religious and theological spirit of his time. 3) As a result of the two previous points, identify the great religious themes found in the works of the Mercedarian, that is, to find the system of thought that underlies the Tirsian works on sacred matter. In order to achieve these objectives, the methodology used is the following: The research starts from a system of gradual concretization, from the most general to the particular, it begins with the study of the Order of Mercy, consulting the Mercedarian bibliographical sources, such as chronicles, stories, constitutions, etc., but also the highlights of the Council of Trent and its extension to the Spanish sphere, and the theological renewal that takes place in the sixteenth century with its epicenter at the University of Salamanca. All this, together with the biographical data we have on the life of Fr. Gabriel Téllez allow us to outline his intellectual biography. Later, at a second level of concretization, we read and analyze the religious works of Tirso de Molina: the five biblical dramas, the three eucharistic plays of proven authorship and the three that offer doubts, the fifteen hagiographical comedies, the two theological dramas , The Historia, El Deleitar Aprovechando and the fragmentary work on the life of Santa Maria de Çervellón. The analysis offers us a series of points of convergence that will guide our study. Finally, through previous historical and religious study and the analysis of the works, we find a series of results or conclusions on theological and religious thought that underlies the works of the Mercedarian, which can be summarized in the following points: A) The Mercedarian is an advocate of the values of his Order. B) If the Franciscan Order and the Jesuit Order are praised in his works, Fray Gabriel avoids pronouncing on the Dominic Order. C) Charity is one of the most important themes of his works. D) The work of Tirso supports theologically in St. Thomas Aquinas, although there are other influences. E) The author defends constantly the Catholicism and the way it is exposed in Trento. F) The Virgin has a prominent role in his works, which is seen in female characters which act as prefigurations and evocations, and in mariogamia and mariofanía. G) His works, following the Tridentine spirit, always have a New Testament interpretation, which can be seen in references, evocations and symbols. H) Tirso defends primitive Christianity and rejects the code of the comedy of golden honor for rejecting to the divine law. I) There is influence of the Mystics in some of his works. J) The catechetical mission, related to divine interventions and the use of other arts, can be seen in almost all his works.
