Abstract

In the last ten years Catalonia has been living an intense process of transformation in the parameters that define the electoral behaviour, passing from a phase of stability, defined by the predominance of two parties (CiU and PSC ), which shared the primacy depending on the type of election, based on two mechanisms : dual vote and differential abstention. This electoral period of stability has been gradually giving way to a scenario of greater volatility, where the dominance of the two aforementioned forces has given prominence to a more fluid one, with a strong shift of support from these traditionally dominant parties to parties that had historically occupied a subsidiary role. On the same time, it has been an intense replacement in the electorate according to the period of birth of electors. Thus, if the early nineties the majority of voters were born before 1960, now the majority was born after that date. The generational replacement does not mean a simple numerical replacement, but it affects the constituent elements of each age group, because the fact of being born in a particular historical moment influences how voters interact with political system, and the society as a whole. Membership generation is a factor to consider, and it has been analysed in other countries for fifty years. In Catalonia this element could not be taken into account until recently, because the difficulties in Catalan democratic history have not allowed the study of the evolution of the electoral behaviour of the generations in which Catalan society can be divided. Four generational groups coexist in Catalonia today: the generation of the civil war, formed by those voters born before 1940; the post-war generation, to which belong those born between 1940 and 1960; the generation of desarrollo, formed by the voters born between 1961 and 1975; and the generation of democracy, to which belong those born after 1976. The analysis of electoral behaviour of these four groups separately brings out elements that differentiate and point to an influence of generational membership in some of the traits that underpin the transformation of electoral behaviour in Catalonia. Thus, the data collected in the research allow to observe a clear generational bias with respect to the parties that vote, so the vote to the traditionally dominant parties is stronger between those who belong the oldest generations, and instead, among the newest generations there is more support to parties that had historically played a more secondary role or to new parties, born recently. The data also show generational differences in terms of voting: newer generations are more volatile, tend to change their vote more easily and to decide on a short lapse of time and based on circumstantial elements. Everything points to a profound change not only on the parties to vote, but in the way electors vote.
