Abstract

Text digitisation was born as a promise. It happened within a utopian context which sought to spread knowledge without barriers. Digital texts would offer capabilities such as copying, correlation, unlimited propagation and interaction with readers. They could also be incorporated into devices specifically designed for reading, and all the knowledge accumulated in archives and libraries could be made available to everyone all over the world. However, practices introduced by companies and governments have prevented these promises from being fulfilled. In addition, digital texts and their supporting devices, when coming into contact with practices established after centuries of dissemination and reading of printed texts, have given rise to a series of cultural discontinuities which have affected the way in which digital works are acquired by readers. Lastly, digital texts have created a new class of reader: automatic systems that can access texts and carry out a series of actions on them, from aiding their exploration to controlling their content. Using data from Spain and other countries, the articles compiled in this thesis analyse the dynamics involved when introducing digital texts at various times, and compare them to historic practices of authorship, publishing and reading, thus shedding light on the changes brought about by new technologies. This thesis also looks at the developments which have taken place since these articles were published and relates them to the context in which they were written.
