Abstract

Ultrafine grain size Armco iron has been obtained through severe plastic deformation through equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) at room temperature, using a die with interna! angle et> = 90 º, and an angle 4J = 37 º defining the outer are of curvature where the two channels intersect. Material was processed following the route BC with different number of passes (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 16 passes). Microstructural characterization was carried out using different techniques such as EBSD, TEM, X-ray and TEM-EBSD. For the mechanical response of the ECAP processed material with respect to the annealed one, hardness, uniaxial tension, high cycle fatigue and fracture toughness tests were performed. To understand better the thermal stability of the deformed material differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) tests and also various annealing heat treatments together with tensile tests were performed for the sixteen ECAP passes material in arder to increase its ductility. Different theoretical models were used to study the strain hardening behavior of the ECAP processed material. The development of a new model that predicts the evolution of the fraction of HAGB with deformation is presented by the author. Microstructural examination revealed the reduction in grain size with the increase in the fraction of high angle grain boundaries at increasing deformation. The grain morphology (aspect ratio) together with the values of the geometrically necessary dislocation density far the material with sixteen passes showed the possibility of a further reduction in grain size obtaining a microstructure with larger fractions of HAGB through application of greater deformation in a different route. The textures obtained after each pass have predom inant orientations with continuous distributions along the orientation fibers with simple shear texture. According to the mechanical tests the material strength increases with increasing deformation up to - 3 times with respect to annealed material. Sim ilarly, the fatigue resistance of the material with eight passes is increased by over 190% campared with the annealed material. A good resistance to fracture toughness was found for material with eight passes by the linear elastic fracture mechanics. The thermal study of the material showed that the main contribution to the stored energy carne from the vacancies, being therefore these primarily responsible far the saturation of the dislocation density. Finally, the study of the strain hardening capability in the ECAP deformed material revealed the existence of two hardening stages characterized by an initial stage of higher hardening followed by a second stage with lower hardening. The reduction in the hardening capacity for large deformations (stage IV) greatly depends on the reduction in the cell walls volume fraction with the increasing deformation. The proposed model to predict the fraction of HAGB with deformation presented good fits for different types of metallic materials processed by severe plastic deformation.
