Abstract

The present doctoral thesis is a theoretical and critical study about identity construction processes in contemporary time. Modern interpretations of the subject, in which identity is conceived as a self-constituting essence, have had serious symbolical consequences in its alterity counterpart, which was established as a supplement, to say in terms of philosopher Jacques Derrida. The fact that a subject’s identity can only be constructed through the hegemony of its category signification at the expense of a supplemental Other is an ethical issue that several philosophers have tackled. Since the linguistic and subjective turns, there have been numerous critical approaches, within the frame of Literary Theory and Comparative Literature, but also in artistic representation, that try to settle and to put on the table different perspectives of this ethical problem that is being discussed from different spaces in the academic field today. Their coincidences and antagonisms intend to be discussed and shown throughout these pages. Specific narrations belonging to the works of three Mexican contemporary authors will be analysed, as case studies, from the interpretation that these methodologies provide. Therefore, the first part of the text is developed as an itinerary that will cover several theoretical approaches, to then establishing a dialogue with the literary texts, which because they represent bodies / subjects that resist the power structure that intends to fixate them, offer new insight on this debate and open the challenges and possibilities that arise from both places, these are, theory and representation. In no case do the specific literary texts pretend to be the excuse that illustrate the theoretical approaches, but the embodiment of these, thus showing the strategies that can be found in their realms to resist the hegemonic discourse.
