Abstract

This research arises from the idea of forgiveness as a tool for social transformation of Hannah Arendt and is complemented by reflections of other philosophers and thinkers. Thinking about forgiveness reminds us of the religious sphere and all the matters related to it within this environment, such as compassion, guilt, forgetfulness, repentance, or justice from God's perspective. But it also exports us to its relationship with love. It makes us questioning about what it represents as a personal act and what it means when this term is used in political scenarios. The ambiguity of the subject term leads us to question about its limits, in the sense of forgiveness, about the advantages and disadvantages of request or grant forgiveness, and about if this value can or should be developed from the perspective of duty. The reader will find a series of issues, some still unanswered, about the possibility and limits of forgiveness in different contexts or about human limitations to grant it. In our research forgiveness transcends the religious sphere, and is analyzed from a more universal perspective, with the aim of providing a reflection that, free from prejudice and cultural peculiarities, searches for its comprehension and importance from the universality and humanity that this entails in different contexts of reconciliation and fight for the conquest of justice. For this reason, it is rescued the importance of heritage memory of the construction of justice that was designed by different societies worldwide who had already suffered violation of their human rights. Forgiveness is not a standalone value. In contexts of conflict, for the reconciliation or reconstruction of a society divided by war or ideals, this value is accompanied by the need of knowledge of the truth of the facts that happened and the need for justice, to achieve the devised peace. There is no general rule that determines which of these values must come before or which of them should come after as an organically generated consequence in the reconciliation process. In our reading of the South African context, based on theories but also in a practical experience, we conclude that in many contexts there needs to be a change in the reality of the population, it is necessary that justice is done. And in the absence of justice, the absence of forgiveness is understandable.
