The main objective of the thesis Contributions of context-based learning and knowledge transfer to competency-based chemical education is to characterize those methods that use context for learning chemistry and how this methods can contribute to student's capability of transferring chemical knowledge. With this goal in mind, three objectives have been defined. The first one deals with context-based education and aims to identify the advantages and disadvantages of this educational approach. The second one is describing, analyzing and understanding the capability of transferring chemical knowledge. The third objective has been focused in the elaboration of specific proposals of dissemination of the results from this research. Qualitative methods for research were used in this investigation. The data for the first objective were collected by means of interviews to 14-15-year-old students about their perception of this new approach. The data for the first part of the second objective were collected using think-aloud interviews to identify the way of reasoning of students when they had to transfer orally. Questionnaires were also used to analyze their transfer capability in written tests. In the second part of the second objective a comparative study was carried out. The sample included students from 4 high schools and one of them used a context-based approach. The main goal was to assess transfer capability of students in relation to the pedagogical content knowledge of their teachers. Questionnaires about transfer and scientific vocations, as well as interviews to teachers were used to collect data. Regarding the third objective, a synthesis of the results from objectives one and two was carried out taking into account the theoretical frameworks of the literature. The content of questionnaires and interviews was qualitatively analysed. Several systems of categories were built to achieve the research goals: students' perception of the context-based approach, the quality of answers to transfer assessments and the pedagogical content knowledge of teachers. The analysis of data for the first objective shows different opinions of learners that support the use of context in science learning: connection to real world, interest for the subject, perception of learning and positive attitude to teaching methods and teaching style. Regarding the difficulties with context-based learning we highlight that students found it hard to apply chemical knowledge in new contexts that had not been previously discussed in class (productive assessment). The difficulty to summarize the main science ideas that appeared in the contexts was also mentioned. The results from the first part of the second objective suggest that the ways of reasoning that students use when they transfer are: analogical thinking, activation of abstract ideas and application of ideas in the new context. The main problems that students have when they transfer are: use of chemical misconceptions, partial use of theoretical models, activation of inappropriate science ideas and lack of coherence in the causal explanations. In regard to the last part of the second objective, the analysis of the results shows that context-based education that integrates other learning strategies (such as model-based inquiry and metacognitive self-regulation) may foster students' capability of transfer and increase the number of scientific vocations. Some results for the third objective are a founded proposal of criteria for the design of context-based teaching-learning sequences. Moreover, a model with the three educational dimensions that contribute to transfer is presented: conceptual, contextual and cognitive-linguistic. This model may help to explain if a scientific literacy assessment can be regarded as a far or near transfer. In conclusion, the main contributions of this thesis are: characterising context-based education, identifying the dimensions that affect transfer and the effect of the pedagogical content knowledge on students' transfer capability and scientific vocation.
