Training the actor is the subject matter of this research, where the inquiry of some of its foundations lead to the aim to contribute elements in order to advance in the comprehension of the main pedagogical foundations of the great constructers of pedagogy in the Twentieth Century by going beyond their techniques (didactic, or training each master) and their esthetics. Accordingly, this research comes closer to the theater pedagogy from a global and transversal perspective as a path to learn how to construct pedagogy. The hypothesis then is the existence of some fundamentals of training of the actor, from four approaches: etymological, ontological, scientific and pedagogical. Each of them constitutes one of the four chapters of this thesis: The first chapter is about the etymological foundation framework. This is the first step to build a common language within the discipline by narrowing down the use of the term training. The second chapter, about the ontological foundation, deals with the actor training. Not only from its technical and methodological issues, but it goes beyond and approaches an ontological reflection of the theater, the actor, and the acting pedagogy. The third chapter is about the scientific founding when understanding the actor. We try to answer from some scientific theories the questions of how and why. With the theater pedagogy based on training, exercises, improvisation, and regular work, the actor could be able to incorporate specific knowledge that would allow him/her to become work of art with the presence of a poetic scenic. Finally, the conclusion chapter gathers the results of those approximations to the etymological, ontological, and scientific foundations of the actor. We approach the understanding of the actor from the perspective of the pedagogical foundations (or pragmatic foundations) with the aim to narrow down some ideas that open the path to further researches from the acting pedagogy approach as a way to learn how to construct pedagogy.
