Abstract

In the first third of the nineteenth century began a process of democratization in China, where the masterminds, politicians and Chinese thinkers conceived democracy in terms of compatibility with the historical circumstances, economic and social policies in China. At the same time, most of them were suspicious of the universal model of liberal democracy emerged from the Euro-American Illustration. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, there were in China various lines of thought, even we can say that there was a debate between right and left, or between liberals and communists, or between nationalists and pro-western thoughts, fact that made the conceptions of democracy could vary, depending on the point of view and the way they were explained. When adjusting democracy to the characteristics of Chinese society, some of the most revolutionary thinkers or with the political ideas more focused on the Euro-American positions observed problems that could bring the "pure" democracy in China, and they questioned the adequacy of the Euro-American model to their circumstances. These facts encouraged a political debate about democratization in China, where the main ideas of some thinkers, were reconverted and fit to the existing reality; where the ideas of the most conservative were made flexible, trying to find the best solution for the society; where the ideas of the meaning of term democracy, took unexpected ways for many intellectuals, thinkers and Chinese politicians, over a century of study (1839-1939). Chinese society became a place of intense debate, where ideas and proposals to assume a new political system required a thorough analysis of the various lines of thought, which allowed the enrichment of the Chinese ideological field and the understanding of the social, political, economic and cultural processes developed in China. This research has attempted to navigate through this wide range of thoughts, ideas, ideologies, and especially has tried to shed light on how the early Chinese who were interested in democracy and in the reform of the Chinese political system, brought new knowledge and a great enrichment to a culture with four thousand years of history.
