Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to study semantic relations between two basic verbs of motion in Spanish, entrar and salir, throughout the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries by using the theoretical proposals of Cognitive Semantics, especially, the Prototype Theory and the Theory of Metaphor and Metonymy. We assume that it is not possible to analyze the vocabulary in isolation, but it is necessary to know the bonds with other words, and the context of use. For this reason, throughout the analysis, the discursive traditions in which they appear have been taken into account. Therefore, the priority is the analysis of lexical and semantic relations from a diachronic perspective and, also, from the use point of view. In the development of this research we have tried a) to analyze the semantic values of the verbs entrar and salir from their Latin etymon until the 15th century, and, thus, to know the changes they have experienced; b) to determine what kinds of words these verbal units are linked to and whether their presence is related to the verb meaning; c) to identify the discursive traditions the corpus examples belong to; d) to research the bonds between those two verbs and other verbs of motion from the same semantic class; and finally, e) to find the metaphoric and metonymic processes involved in the evolution of both verbs and to explain their development by the Prototype Theory. All this takes place along the six chapters included in this research. In the first one, the theoretical framework features –Cognitive Semantics– and the existing studies about the linguistic manifestation of motion, such as the localistic theories, lexicalization patterns, and embodiment, are presented. This chapter also highlights the relevance of lexical links and their implementation in Lexicography, in addition to introducing the concepts of communicative immediacy and communicative distance and the discursive traditions roles. In the second chapter, we prove the delimitation of the objects of study and we explain the choice of Corpus Linguistics as a method to collect data, as well as a review of its history is exposed. The features of NDHE are also disclosed, as it is the source of the examples of our corpus. The third and fourth chapters cover the analysis of the verb entrar and salir, respectively. Although the timeframe of the core of the research is 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries, in both cases we have gone back to its Latin etymon and have explored the semantic bonds that existed in that language. Next, we analyzed their evolution to romance prior to the 13th century and, finally, we have made the analysis of the selected period. Each span of hundred years has its own section in which we have analyzed one by one each semantic extension of both verbs in relation to the discursive traditions in which they appear and the words they select as verbal arguments. The status of lexical rivalry experienced by salir and its synonym exir is especially relevant. Much of chapter four is dedicated to it, as well as to the restructuring experienced by the group of verbs of motion in its transition from Latin to romance. In chapter five the results of the examination of each verb are compared and we define the similarities and the differences in the development of both units. We also show the cognitive processes operating in the use of entrar and salir and the consequences they have in their structure as categories. Additionally, considering each meaning as a member of a category, it is possible to explain the diachronic evolution in terms of more or less prototypicality. Finally, in chapter six, we highlight the similarities between the verbs entrar and salir as they belong to the same semantic class, as well as the importance of the links with other verbs of motion.
