Resumen

The thesis proposes an analysis of the relationship between literature and architecture at the turn of 19th to 20th century. From the verification of the importance of literature and reading in the period previous to modern movement, and observing the critique some avantgarde manifestos threw to a so called literary architecture, research seeks to interpret to what extent architecture fed on storytelling and especially on the novel. The analysis of the relationship between these two disciplines is not only focused in the area of ideas or creative methodology, aspects widely discussed in various studies, but also includes the field of fiction. Taking this concept of fiction, essential resource in novel that along the 19th century is also applied to the built environment, the thesis aims to identify common elements between literary and architectural creation, especially the link between the creative subject, the inhabitant and the reader. The work is divided into two main parts. In the first one, broad and diverse series of texts of writers and architects in English, French and German from the last decade of 18th century to the first decade 20th century are analyzed. This analysis has been attempted to identify resources, common figures and constructions in the conception, creation and interpretation of space. This regard includes the realization of the idea of a narrative architecture, based on fictional, environment, memory and trace of life aspects, in contrast to a compositional architecture. This idea allows the approach to two authors, Marcel Proust and Adolf Loos, who have been taken as a case study for the interpretation of the possible influence between architecture and literature in the period of development of modernity. The second part of the thesis is centered on this interpretation. The selection of Proust and Loos is based on the importance architecture and literature had in both authors and the fact that written production of the both is fully contemporary- between 1896 and 1922 in the case of Proust, from 1897 to 1933 in the case of Loos. However, despite this complete chronological coincidence, both authors have received various and sometimes contradictory interpretive approaches in historiographical literature. Therefore, the study has given special importance to studies and monographs on both, with the conviction that could give clues to possible new interpretation keys. Throughout the thesis fundamental concepts have been developed, such as truth, individuality, style, ornament, gesture, artist or concretion, which seem to have been condensed through a constant dialectic between literary prose and architecture writings. Understanding these concepts in modern literature, and especially in the work of Marcel Proust, has served to establish interpretive criteria that may clarify and refine the analysis of some buildings of the turn of 19th to 20th century, and mainly the work of Adolf Loos.
