Nuestro estudio empieza con una revisión del estado de arte. Además de la revisión cualitativa, nuestro primer capitulo también incluye un meta-análisis con el objetivo de sintetizar los efectos del downsizing en la rentabilidad. El tamaño del efecto, estimado por la integración de los ocho estudios posibles en el tema de los efectos del downsizing en la rentabilidad, es positivo, sin embargo es muy pequeño, lo que nos impide de concluir que las reducciones de plantilla aumentan, de forma inequívoca, la rentabilidad de las empresas. El segundo capitulo, estudia los efectos organizacionales. Hemos utilizado una muestra de empresas Portuguesas con más de 50 trabajadores, totalizando 2994 empresas. Se concluye que nuestras variables de rentabilidad (ROA, MB), son significativamente distintitas y negativas, en el año anterior al downsizing y en el propio año del fenómeno. Los resultados demuestran que en al año antes del fenómeno ocurrir, la rentabilidad es inferior para las empresas DOWNSIZER, cuando comparadas con las NO DOWNSIZER, lo que confirma la idea de que las empresas que han reducido su fuerza de trabajo han tenido peores resultados. En cuanto a los efectos longitudinales de las DOWNSIZER, los resultados no nos permiten confirmar que las empresas mejoran sus resultados en los dos años siguientes al downsizing, debido a las diferencias no significativas. Otro grupo de efectos los individuales ha sido estudiado en el tercer capitulo, y los resultados demuestran que, cuando se esta en un ambiente de downsizing, los empleados tienen más percepciones de inseguridad en el empleo que los empleados en ambientes de no downsizing, aunque la diferencia no es significativa. Además, en ambientes no downsizing, la falta de compromiso y los comportamientos innovadores son significativamente inferiores que en contextos de downsizing.

We began our study with a state of art description. Regardless of the qualitative part, our first chapter also includes a meta-analysis with the purpose of synthesizing the organizational effects of downsizing on profitability. The effect size estimated by the integration of the eight possible studies in the downsizing effects on profitability research field is positive, even though it is extremely small, which avoid us to conclude that the plant reductions unquestionably increase the company s profitability.Concerning the second chapter, as regards organizational effects, we worked based ourselves on a sample of Portuguese companies with at least 50 employees, a total of 2994 companies. We may conclude that our profitability variables, ROA and PM, differ in a significantly negative way and with a pattern in the year before the downsizing occurs and in the t year, the year of the downsizing occurrence. Results indicate that profitability measures in the year before the downsizing are lower in the case of DOWNSIZERS when compared with the NO DOWNSIZERS, what confirms the idea that those firms that downsized their workforce had had previous worse results. As to the longitudinal effects for DOWNSIZER firms, the results do not allow us to confirm that firms increased their results in the succeeding years after downsizing, due to the fact that there were no significant differences. Other group of effects - the individual ones - was studied in our third chapter, and some empirical evidence highlighted that, when facing a downsizing environment, employees have higher perceptions of job insecurity than in no-downsizing contexts, although this difference is not statistically significant. With respect to no-downsizing contexts, the lack of commitment and the innovative behaviour are significantly lower than in downsizing circumstances.
