Abstract

Inkjet printed electronics using thermocurable liquid inks exhibits irregular geometric characteristics. It is possible to print microelectronic devices and interconnects on the same substrate. I have reviewed the methods and procedures for characterization the standard microelectronics, this was done through a qualitative validation with studies on printed passive and active devices, with the premise that standard procedures cannot be applied directly into this emergent technology. This review allow to define the geometrical and electrical characteristics of interest, and its relationship with the stability and variability in order to choose adequate experimentation and instrumentation for the characterization processes. An analysis of the usage for different microelectronic test structures applied to inkjet printed circuits is reported in this thesis. Those test structures are used in characterization procedures to extract geometrical and electrical features. Design of inkjet printed test structures should consider the ink coalescence and coffee ring effects. This thesis presents a morphological analysis for inkjet printed multi line intersections that are critical structures for building circuits. I have studied thin-film structures of silver conductive ink and printed by inkjet technology. Instability of the ink during printing causes the thickness irregularity of vertex, normally with peaks at these areas. I have proposed and tested the usage of specific patterns for intersections as thickness regularity compensations. The results show that some patterns help to reduce this instability and improve the thickness regularity of intersections morphology. From this I define an empiric methodology that allows the compensation of designs for inkjet printing, this methodology has been validated for the case of multi-line intersections for the wiring layer of circuits.
