Abstract

This doctoral dissertation analyses teachers' perceptions regarding implementation of the new subject Ciencias para el mundo contemporáneo (Science for the Contemporary World). The goal is to characterize this new subject by establishing connections and disconnections between the Potential Curriculum and the Implemented Curriculum. The characterization and analysis of the subject has been done taking into account the three dimensions that define a curriculum: why to teach, what to teach and how to teach. The definition of the Potential Curriculum has been done by analyzing different contributions from the Science Education field along history, which bring together the great amount of work gone into the goal of achieving a scientifically literate society and a teaching of science which is competence-based and with a social perspective. The identification of the Implemented Curriculum has been done by studying the views of a group of science teachers who were implementing the subject for the first time, gathered by means of personal interviews. Part of the teachers' group were in close connection with the Science Education field while the other half did not have any link with the field, like most teachers. The most relevant results of this research have been the identification of four different ways of interpreting the Potential Curriculum, which have been labeled as Epistemic Model, Utilitarian Model, Controversial Model and Academic Model. The first three models show adequate readings of the Potential Curriculum, implying that implementations of the subject done from these perspectives are congruent with the Potential Curriculum, whereas if the Implemented Curriculum is done from the perspective of the Academic Model it distorts the rationale of the Potential Curriculum. Another relevant result has been the finding of most teachers' holding a perspective which is a hybrid version of these models. Besides it has been possible to identify the different factors which have conditioned the implementation of the subject, being didactical expertise a crucially relevant factor. These results offer teachers criteria for reflecting, rethinking and problematising the Potential Curricula when implementing a new subject, so that they can take advantage and enrich their views with the contributions that come from the Science Education field.
