Abstract

Based on a theoretical framework consisting of the scientific scholar activity model by M. Izquierdo and the ONEPSY model by R. Gutiérrez, we analyzed a learning sequence for compulsory education, and a conversation about some parts of the same sequence, maintained between a teacher and a student to try to understand sequence dynamics and regulation systems. To perform these analyses, we had to create a new symbolic language based on categories drawn from the theoretical framework and from the results. As an outcome, we have been able to identify several features that cause that both sequence and conversation become didactically productive. First, we confirmed the coherence of our theoretical framework with the design of the sequence and the development of the conversation. A key result has been to prove that cognitive and emotional processes predicted during the sequence design were actually followed by the student throughout the conversation, although accompanied by the emergence of minor problems easily solved. Analyzing which characteristics of the sequence makes it pedagogically productive, we found the need to design a series of physical systems organized in certain ways for the students reach to understand how systems work, experimenting certain emotional states of dissatisfaction with personal mental models. This dissatisfaction was found to be the driving force for changing mental models and, therefore, learning. The new knowledge about the systems can be generalized building generic systems from models build for specific systems. The new knowledge is collected and written. The teacher tries to ensure that every student will be able to apply the new knowledge to new systems, in a progressively more autonomous way. The whole group of systems must be a clear path to resolve the expected difficulties and achieve satisfactory mental models, with the positive cognitive and emotional consequences that the process can generate. Regarding the conversation, we have also identified some characteristics that make it pedagogically productive. This way, the use of “teachback” dialogue has been crucial to achieve a consensus with student about his mental models and to help him to advance in his reconstruction, a process of learning that we have reach to interpret dynamically each of the interventions. Conduction of the dialogue is made by the teacher focusing the student attention on the ambiguities in his mental model, as perceived by teacher. Focusing on the ambiguities he want to stimulate the student’s need to clarify them, or in some cases, rebuild their mental model. We also observed the need to regulate other aspects of the conversation: focusing on the planning and performing operations on the real system, collaborate for the progress of conversation through language, evaluate it and, if necessary, reorient the path of the conversation and explore its social consequences. We have found answers of the student based on inferences made by the mental models, and other answers not based in inferences. The answers based on inferences have allowed us to reconstruct the history of the solution of each of the problems that have arisen during the conversation. Finally, results are discussed in relation to the current state of research, proposing some research questions to pursue this line of inquiry.
