Abstract

The current agrifood system (AFS) has daily impacts on the way food is produced, distributed and consumed. One of the most relevant trends in this context is concentration (i.e. of decision-making power, of added value) in the supply chain link. Supermarkets are the leading actors of a process referred to as wallmartization which, in parallel, disempowers the production and consumption extremes of the agrifood chain. This reality has triggered demands that claim for the democratization of the agrifood system, as well as practical experiences that represent a will of emancipation from the dominant system. In the literature the concept of alternative food networks (AFNs) comprises very diverse experiences which more or less intensely move away from the dominant AFS. In this context, food sovereignty (FSv) is the pacesetter of projects and proposals based on a repolitization of the food issue. In this thesis I explore what is understood by alternative within the so-called alternative food networks. The aim is to review classical notions of AFNs and propose new typologies for the specific case of Catalonia. Food sovereignty is a practical and theoretical pacesetter for AFNs with a transformative goal. From this hypothesis I intend to explore the diversity of discourses around food sovereignty within the Catalan transformative agrifood movement. Understood as a proposal of social transformation in the agrifood field, I am interested in achieving a better knowledge of the conceptual and strategic diversity implied by FSv as a shared pacesetter for the members of the related movement. Local problematization of the concept is relevant because it allows for the identification of the limitations and possibilities for the progress of FSv, and thus for the progress of social transformation in the agrifood field.
