Abstract

The thesis here exposed is related to the reality construction. Particularly, in the engineering field, this construction has to do with the artificial systems that arose as material and cognitive realities thanks to the use of diagrams.

The thesis' aim is to go deep into the manner in which the people known in engineering making use of a Knowledge Theory perspective. This has meant to use the knowledge epistemology of Humberto Maturana and, on the other hand, to the semiotics from Pierce's perspective.

This conceptual basis is used on a discourse where project concepts, mental resolution process, and diagram are used.

A project is a system of systems and a cognitive process of problem resolution. The mental resolution process is distinguished within the project. This process is the place where born the solutions to a conflict and where the designer's creativity is expressed.

As part of the mental resolution procedure, language is shown as a tool for the designer in the solution creation process. This is how the mental resolution process is presented, as a distinction operation in Maturana's terms, in which language, as a sign system, is the base of the knowledge and of the construction of realities.

The diagrams are analyzed in a linguistic and a semiotic manner. According to Humberto Maturana, linguistically the diagrams are a medium to describe the (objective) reality as part of distinction operations. Semiotically, diagrams are part of mental resolution process composed by many distinction operations that permit to represent a reality.

In this manner, through an investigation research composed by many methodological elements sustained in a paradigm of systemic, post-positivist and post-rationalist basis, the result obtained is a knowledge organization on real artificial systems.

First, this knowledge organization is a theoretical foundation that explains the process of mental resolution in engineering. Second, it is the formal definition of a set o relationships that allows to diagram technically the users' interest about a real artificial system from its features.

Therefore, this thesis contributes to the Project Engineering field in the following ways:

Firstly, a theoretical contribution. When elaborating an explanation from the Knowledge Theory of the mental resolution, which manifests in the engineering projects, a theoretical foundation for the Engineering Project theory is offered. This elaboration is based in a cognitive explanation of the mental resolution process inside which the diagrams are the medium by knowing and building real artificial systems.

Secondly, a practical contribution. To address the interpretation problem that occurs in the mental resolution process, an instrument is offered to sustain the viewpoint developed from the Knowledge Theory. In this sense this instrument, first, shows to the designer, a repertory of interests about the externalities of the real artificial systems and also lets him approach and know the world and the language of the users' interests. Second, it shows a typology of engineering diagrams that permits to represent such interest in the diagrammatic language of projects as it were the technical features of a real artificial system.
