Abstract

The Consuelo de la vejez is an anonymous consolation treatise of the first 30 years of the XVI century; it's also one of the earliest, and rare, pieces of prose dialogued written in Castilian language.
That's a dialogue between two old friends, Albano and Briciano, who spend a day speaking about the old age and the death; literally, they represent two opposite positions for what concerns the old age: Briciano supports the positive theory and he has the function of "teacher"; Albano supports the negative theory and he has the function of "disciple". The writing is developed in 12 chapters: from the first to the fifth it speaks about the vituperatio and the laudatio of the old age; from the sixth to the ninth it examines the good and the evil that the old age brings; from the tenth to the twelfth it reflects about the logical consequence of the old age: the death. The treatise is a continuous spiritual growth, that starts by speaking about the body and goes on speaking about the soul; it can be said that the Consuelo de la vejez starts as Ars vivendi, goes on as Memento moris and ends as Ars moriendi.
The Consuelo de la vejez seems to be one of the oldest dialogued treatises in Castilian language. Born in the pre-counterreformation time, it's full of wishes of reforms but, sometimes, of the safety of the antiquity, too. It's older than the Índices expurgatorios españoles and it expounds the restlessness, the "errors" and the trials of its moment. In it we can find two literary traditions, the consolation and the dialogue, with its topoi, examples, formulas, techniques, etc., but also two worlds, two cultures, two different ways to see life: the medieval one and the renaissancist one.
It can be said that the Consuelo is born in a time and in a place where the "old" continues to live and the "new" is settling down: it imitates the style and the themes of the classical models, but these are compatible with the contemporary ones; it keeps the rules of the classical rhetoric, but, sometimes, it uses a very pure language full of colloquial expressions; it uses new literary forms: it wants to replace the monologue of the medieval treatise with the dialogue (that's one of the first who tests this genre in the Castilian language; it replaces the Latin with the vernacular.
The principal models of the Consuelo de la vejez are: on the one hand the Cicerone's treatise De Senectute; on the other the Petrarca's one De Remedis; and then the Erasmo's one De Praeparatio. At these sources we can add other important ones like: Las Epistolas of San Jeronimo, La Agonía of Venegas and, of course, the Biblia; and then there ore other treatise of classical and Castilian authors.
The Consuelo de la vejez was very popular (not only in Spain), and we know 4 prints, with not many copies in the central years of the XVI century: 1539, 1541, 1544, 1561
1539: Salamanca, anonymous author and anonymous printer
1541: Burgos, anonymous author and anonymous printer
1544: Salamanca, anonymous author, printer: Juan de Junta (we have two different printings
1561: Salamanca, author: Licenciado Mérida "Catedrático de la Universidad de Salamanca y Canónigo de Palencia"; printer: Antonio Cánovas.
In 1583 we find the Índice Quiroga among the "libros prohibidos en lengua romance". At all this, we have to add a translation of the Consuelo de la vejez to Latin, with the title of Solatium Senectutis.
Being forgotten, during the centuries after, we will find it only cited, described or catalogued in different bibliographical index and in the Índices expurgatorios.
