Abstract

The main goal of this reseach is three-fold: firstly, to explain the Francoist occupation of the city of Barcelona; secondly, to explain the history of the concentration camp of Horta; and finally to understand the relationship between the concentration camp and the men prisons of the Catalan capital, from the fall of the city to the closing of the prisoners camp in April 1940 the provisional prisons were closed between 1942 and 1944 which in turn allows to understand the Francoist repression previous to court-martial.
We have worked with a diversity of archive-related sources, both civil and military centers, in order to know and at the same time to understand accurately these three aspects. Among the numerous consulted archives, it is worth mentioning that Avila, Guadalajara and Barcelona city (El Bruc) have been the most important ones, where we had the chance to consult unpublished military documentation, which resulted in great documentary richness. Before that, it had never been possible to explain, from primary sources, the occupation of the city as well as the way the concentration camp and prisons of the city worked.
In order to understand how the concentration camp of the Catalan capital worked we have to explain, in the first place, how Franco's Army planned the occupation of the city and, as of this moment, the way the city was managed, both at military and civil level, with the creation of the Headquarters of the Occupation Services, that were operative until August 1939. Secondly, considering that the concentration camps were not exclusive of Barcelona, we needed to understand what they were, how they worked and, mainly, the purpose the Francoist concentration camps were used for during the war and the immediate postwar period. Once the concentration camp of Barcelona city was located in the space, in time an in its functionality the last aspect we treated was the relationship between the concentration camps and the men prisons of Barcelona (Model, Sant Elies, Cànem and Palau de les Missions); in this way, we have achieved to understand how the concentration camps system and the penitentiary one complemented on each other in the occupied city.
