Abstract

[1] las especiales circunstancias vitales de un Guillén tan sólo siete años menor que su amigo y maestro Lope de Vega, y, para más señas, nacido y forjado como dramaturgo justamente en la ciudad -Valencia- escogida por el novel Lope para madurar el revolucionario proyecto dramático -la "Comedia nueva"- con el que habría de renovar y encumbrar toda la escena española;

The primary objective of this dissertation is to rescue from historic oblivion the Valencian dramatist don Guillén de Castro y Bellvís (1569-1631), shedding more light on someone who often remains in the shadows, eclipsed by the blinding glory of Lope de Vega and Calderón de la Barca during the Golden Age of Theater of Spain. This objective, which requires unique reflections upon the very foundations of the national Spanish drama, employs two previous studies as a springboard for elaboration on the writings by this poet/dramatist of the Turia. The first study examined the particular circumstances in which Guillén, only seven years younger than his friend and mentor Lope de Vega, evolved into a playwright, living in the same city, Valencia, where Lope himself had chosen to develop his newly-created dramatic form, the Comedia nueva. The Comedia would revolutionize and take to new heights the Spanish drama. The second study examined the significant recognition by his fellow comediantes and contemporaries, such as Gaspar Mercader, Juan Pérez de Montalbán, Agustín de Rojas Villandrando, Baltasar Gracián, and especially Cervantes and Lope de Vega, which he received during his lifetime, praising his creative genius and his poetic work during the difficult moments of a newly-created and still-developing genre of Comedia nueva.
Indeed, the life and work of Guillén de Castro, without ever forgetting certain testimonies from that time, already speak of an anomalous "disciple" of Lope de Vega, in the sense that Guillén's dramatic production does not stem from the revolutionary teachings of Lope, but rather is the result of a natural evolution of a poet who, after experimenting parallel to Lope with new and modern dramatic forms in accord with the Spanish taste of the moment, ends up embracing, although without depersonalizing, the triumphant form prescribed by Lope with the approval of the audience. It is evident, then that is pressing to review the old topics, spread by the critics and literary history texts, of Guillén as a mere epigone of Lope or of Lope as a "Fénix" creator alone and ex-nihilo of the Comedia nueva. To dethrone such erroneous assumptions inserted into literary historiography is what this dissertation purports to do, with its precise study of the dramatic art of one of the poets who, from the beginning, accompanied Lope in his endeavor to elevate Spanish drama.
It is obvious that a peculiar dramatic trajectory as singular as well as foreign strange in a presumable "disciple" of Lope would have to confer upon Guillén a complex literary personality or, in the words of Menéndez Pelayo, "poco convencional" ("not very conventional"), that is to say, certainly faithful to the norm established by the "Fénix," but not therefore lacking the singularity granted by his Valencian ancestry, and thus it is. Norm and difference, formulism and originality, terms that are apparently contradictory, find themselves well harmonized in Guillén's dramatic art, which thus shows itself extremely capable in its process of integration into Lope's mold of the Comedia. For that reason, a thorough study of Guillén de Castro's work demands the close analysis of his "integration" and "differentiation" (or "ingenuity," as John G. Weiger would say), with respect to Lope's Comedia formula. And what better way to do that than focusing on the manner in which Guillén made his own the most solid of the precepts -the purported "theory of the characters," outlined by Lope in verses 269-89 of his "Arte Nuevo de hacer comedias en este tiempo"- by the famous "invisible poetics" of Lope? The selection and demarcation of the field of study is logical: well-known is the character of essential component of the dramatic genre that has always tended to theatrical characters. The thesis therefore acquires a strong descriptive focus, oriented towards an immediate goal: it demonstrates the singularity of Guillén's fictional world in the context of the conventional Golden Age taxonomy of which it is a part. The approach and method utilized are the result of an epistomological decision made in consideration of the double nature, literary and theatrical, of Guillén's texts, which has permitted the descriptive analysis of Guillén's types/masks from the two perspectives or fundamental levels of signification of the Comedia: the technical or formal and the sociological.
